Riddle me this about tuners

I don't shoot short range but there are quiet few IBS and Freedom shooters that win and set records without tuners, I haven't been really paying attention but I'd guess 7 out of top 10 600/1K shooters do not use tuners, and these shooters know how to tune and keep their rifles in tune........there must be a reason

That's not very neighborly of you Jeff. The OP asked a question about physics. Why don't you share your wealth of knowledge with him?

BTW, correlation is not equal to causation. Winning with a tuner could be the result of the tuner helping, the tuner doing nothing, or in spite of any hindrance created by the tuner. There hasn't been any real science done in the tuner space that can pin down anything more than a series of confirmation biases in both directions.

Let me ask a couple simple questions: If 100 shooters show up, all using tuners, what percentage of them win the match? What if one more, tunerless, shooter is present, but outclasses the others in skill?
The statement above that “there hasn’t been any real science done” caught my eye. If I have overlooked a previous post in this thread about scientific testing of tuners, please pardon me, but there has been a significant amount of scientific work done regarding tuners by Bryan Litz and the team from Applied Ballistics.

If you comment on this work, please mention in your post whether you read the entire work cited.

I have read it, and I think the work speaks for itself. I won’t spoil the pleasure inquisitive folks would get from reading it.

Tell us your own tuner experience and how you used it.

I don’t think my personal experiences are more interesting or useful than anyone else’s. Why do you want to know my experiences? Is it because I cited the existence of a scientific study? I didn’t comment about the conclusions from the study. I merely cited the existence of the work.

Very naieve assumptions. I've been using a tuner for LR BR for quite some time with much success. It's a great tool to have for multiple reasons. Lack of tuning knowledge is far from it!

Look at it as a tool...it's used for a purpose and you need to know how to use it to get the results you are looking for.

Is it ? is it really very naive assumption ?

You made me go back and look, 2023 IBS 600yd SOY top ten I see only one top ten shooter that I know for a fact is using a tuner, I'm not sure about 1K since I don't shoot many 1K matches.
I'm glad it is helping you in LRBR and you're having much success but looks like a lot of top shooters are not using tuners so I stand by my statement.

Good luck to you Chuck

Because his test was less than ideal due to lack of experience. He's a reputable person and well educated but unless you know the value on target of each increment you move a tuner, there's simply no way to get predictable and/or repeatable results. He got the results out of the test that he put into the test, random results. I think he has seen the value in what I'm describing since then, as indicated by his comments in a later interview. Bottom line, if you move a tuner without knowing the value of each adjustment, then you, he or anyone..can't expect to get repeatable results. No test may well be better than one done wrong from the get go. Your claim that no other testing has been done is far from true. You are simply choosing who to believe based on whatever criteria. It's ok but I think anyone can look at the results many have with tuners and their conclusions being so different from the Litz results should at least raise an eyebrow. If you had experience with tuners and using it properly, I'm just confident you'd feel like his test was not done properly, no matter how many rounds he fired.

1800 rounds across 4 guns off bipods doesn’t really stand up to scrutiny as far as testing robustness goes, though. That’s a small sample for a lot of us. Not to mention that you will not never ever agg as good off of a bipod as you would a rest. They made a load, then chopped off a signicant portion of the barrel (threading) then tried to take that same load and wonder why the dispersion doesn’t change. It wasn’t good to begin with, and no amount of anything other than a solid load workup from scratch will save it.

You start with a turd, You end up with a turd. Most of the time when I see that book mentioned, it is by people who don’t compete at high levels, people who want to feel intellectually superior to others, or people who accept mediocrity as the best they can do. Not at all saying that is you, as I don’t know you, but those have been my observations thus far.

In one of his books he mentions that seating depth doesn’t matter. Opinion instantly discarded.

@gunsandgunsmithing, If you were talking to me, when exactly did I “claim that no other testing has been done” (your words)?

I’m interested in hearing the interview you mentioned if you can tell me where to find that.

Maybe it's geographical or something but I look at the same top 10 and at least 5 of them are in my customer report as having bought just my tuners alone, not counting other makes. Some of them buying 2 or 3 at a time. Can't say what they shot for sure but they did buy them, as well as many more when I look at the list. I know many of these folks. I won't name them and will leave that up to them or not but trust me, there are a bunch of tuners in both short and long range. Just sold one yesterday to a nice gentleman that I think he said he knows you pretty well, too...fwiw. Not saying you can't win without a tuner but it's getting more and more that way as time goes.

This tuner thread is a dumpster fire compared to the other one that’s active right now where guys are actually trying to learn from each other through experience instead of theory.
Kinda like driving by a truck fire on the way home, ya just gotta look ?

How can a tuner that weighs 2-4 oz made from aluminum. Make a difference on a 1.25 straight diameter. 30-32 inches long truck axle?
Obviously you have never worked with a tuner, I'm not being derogatory to you at all, I use a tuner on all my guns, I sometimes compare it to changing powder weight or seating depth without the mess. If you do the test that Mike @gunsandgunsmithing has people do when they buy a tuner you will SEE the results. Hope this helps.
