The base to ogive is the important dimension.

If you are going to tip the bullets then sorting by OAL can be very useful.

Correct, for my intents and purposes, this is why it's OAL. I meplat trim and bullet point.

BTO measurements can be tough when using a hybrid style design, I've read where some short range br shooters preferred oal measurements, does discipline dictate which is best??

I've made some changes on this bullet measuring tool QBMv1 and the first 3 shipped out also reflect that.

1.). Added brass inserts for the tension screws.
2.) Longer Base Adjustment Screw to accommodate smaller/shorter calibers
3.) Beefed up the body itself.

Usually it's base to ogive for the short games, and OAL for the long range
events.
