Hiking in bear country?!?

I misspoke on the story of the BC man who killed the grizzly with a 3 1/2 inch knife. It was a 2 inch bladed pocketknife and the bear did not die at the time but was killed later. The victim, despite serious injuries, managed to ride his bicycle nearly five mile to get help.
It seems to me there is a record of a similar incident in the interior but I'm not real sure. WH

My point is that actual bear attacks are extremely rare, even though bear encounters are frequent. We don't need to defend against bear encounters.

Bear attacks are on the rise ,it's inevitable protect wildlife and Don't allow thinning over population is end results . Along with current trends of wasting disease I predict BAD OUTCOMES .

IMO and I'm certainly NO expert ; Worst time for encounter is Springtime and Early Fall ,as both are PEAK feeding priority and from carcasses I've come across , Ursus horribilis isn't all that picky !.

I'm perfectly content to allow Bears Moose and Bull Elk to take their right away ,in other words I DON'T in any way shape or form attempt to impede their destinations . As I personally Don't hunt predators ,except coyotes where their a nuisance ,live and let live is MY motto . I still prepare for the WORST ,regardless .

I've had some very scary moose encounters with Cows and calves. Got between a Cow and her calf(s) on a couple occasions accidentally while backpacking. Very cool at first with the experience but they always go bad fairly fast. I found myself running and shedding my pack in one of the cases. I think they are more dangerous than some bear charges because the Cows actually follow thru with their charge. It's not just a bluff.

Well guys spring bear season starts 4-15 and I am heading up the mountain with a good rifle and hopefully I’ll see one before he sees me.

Not a bear but here's my point.
This was in Washington state i think.

With cubs is not the only time to be concerned about black bear.

Two years ago i was scouting & checking game cameras in PA.
Following a game trail through the woods came accross some pine trees. Path went through them, (hole between the boughs) and i could see it was brighter on the other side indicating a clearing of some sort.
I ducked down & went through coming into a small clearing (about 25 yard diameter).
What i didn't realize was the 400lb black bear on the other side of the clearing that was as surprised as i was.

Much growling, drooling and jaw clicking ensued. Then it stood up, still growling (i guess more huffing than growling) & drooling.
Wherein i pulled my Walther PPS out.
Bear came back down on all 4s and took a step towards me.
I put a round in the ground in front of it.
Bear stopped & stood there, jaw clicking, drooling (god there was so much drool!!) and huffing at me.
I slowly backed out of the opening i came through and beat feet outta there!

Now i carry a rifle when i'm in the area.
I still carry my PPS while archery hunting.
