What is the preferred method of measuring the back of the headspace gauge to the shoulder?
Whichever works best for you. Depth mic, DRO, indicator, Coke, Pepsi, RC Cola.
Very ingenious tool. Sure would make the job easier going to a certain number. I don't do any chamber work, but if I did this would be on my short list of things to make. Nice.Various diameters and lengths.
The thimble squares up the gage and is repeatable to within a few tenths. I need to make one up for non shouldered barrels.

Yeah, you and I have talked about this but you didn’t understand. Get a thread checker/protector from BAT.I would really like to know how people use a depth mic to measure from the shoulder to the headspace gauge without it being totally suspect.
I've seen people talk about having a nut that they can put on the threads up to the shoulder and then actually measure from that.

Edit: you’ve got a whole box of barrel nuts you can use for the same thing.
I have both. I use the threaded ones to keep track of an action and where the barrels need to be clocked. Once I have an action once, It's the only time I need it.

Would you quit...you're going to make me break down and buy a rotary.I have both. I use the threaded ones to keep track of an action and where the barrels need to be clocked. Once I have an action once, It's the only time I need it.

Correct. I do understand the principle.
I was simply asking HOW the person measures... physically. Or the process with the nut.
I want a set!!! Take my money!!!
This prompted me to get off my ass. I ordered this for non shouldered barrels. Make up a collar and zero it on a surface plate. Beats the hell out of the three ring circus I've been doing. Depth mic and a separate collar.

I made these for replicating headspace, cone dimensions and timing, they seem to get me within .0001-.0002
