I have a new old stock Remington 40X marked US. It has the provisions for the stripper clips. It is drilled and tapped for iron sights on the LR of the receiver. The barrel is marked Remington Arms Ilion, NY and 308 Win. No proof marks or the normal date codes. The US stamp is above the number on the receiver. 0393??-B. It is a barreled receiver. I have the John Lacey book, but didn't learn from it.
What do I have?

It is my understanding all Vietnam era guns have serial numbers in a certain block and if it is in that block and not obviously a fake it may be the real thing. Could be worth a tidy sum i would think. The number block should be in that book or on the net.

I sure would not know how to search it. I also have a M24 that a buddy has to check it out., but I do need to get it back from him.

Thank you Brian your google foo is impressive that was just what I was talking about. I read somewhere the other day that they are letting Vietnam era sniper rifles in the vintage sniper rifle matches now. Should up the value of both of your rifles.

If I am understanding correctly, this is a new old stock 40X and is just a barreled receiver without a bolt.

A few years ago on gunbroker a well known company that I cant remember the name of was selling a bunch of NOS Remington barreled receivers. Some were 40X, they had no proof marks because they never left Remington as a rifle and no bolt or boltstop parts were ever installed onto the receiver.

I did end up with one but it was a 223 VTR barreled receiver not a 40X. You may possibly have one of these.

M40 (1966-1976)
After testing existing bolt-action rifles for accuracy, durability and immediate availability, the Marine Corps decided on the Remington Model 700. Some reports indicate that early guns procured from Remington's Ilion, N.Y., Custom Shop were built on 40X target model receivers. Nevertheless, that first batch of M40s was assembled with commercial receivers rollmarked "Remington Model 700" along with the "U.S." military property marking above the serial number. They sported free-floating, medium-weight, chromemoly steel barrels, and their actions were factory-bedded to uncheckered wood stocks. The "Rifle, 7.62mm Sniper, M40," adopted April 7, 1966, was to serve as the foundation for USMC sniper rifles for the following four decades.

Remington's original M40 builder

A year os so ago Dave Kiff said he had a few M40 and M24 barreled actions with bolt. I bought one of each. I am at my other shop and can'tr check the measurement of the muzzle or length. As mentioned abovge the only marking on the barrel is Remington Ilion Ny and 308 Win.

Mr. Lambert, I emailed one of my buddies, this is his response to the OP:

You have a pre-1968 gov. issue & the screw holes on the left side of the action are only for peep sites ,but being a gov. rifle I would Think that you have a heavy barrel. let me know more about this rifle.

It is a heavy barrel. Maybe close to either a #5 or #17 Shilen contour is best as I can tell without measuring it.

I don't know if true, but a person told me that the Trump sons have some of the M40 items and he was trying to see if he could source an original stock and bottom metal for me. I would be interested in what your friend might know.
