6-digit SN 700

Remington did and does not build the M40, the USMC does.

This is about the only shooting forum I frequent any more because it is the source of the best info for the type of shooting I like; however, it is not the best forum for all shooting.

To those who are not interested in owning or shooting a replica of an M40, I'm with you; however, there are those that are. I have seen original USMC marked Unertl 10x scopes sell for well north of $10,000. Those are going on M40 a# replicas. There are a whole lot of people out there who want to and do build replicas, right down to the scope bases, sling swivels. Try to find a McM turn in these days (even harder, try to find a smear).

If you are interested in M40s go to one of the forums linked in the post above.

6 digit clip slotted action... (edited to add this is a factory "clip slot" not a USMC spec clip slot)
September 1964

What you see in the rear bridge is a BROACHED slot carried over from 721/722 receiver manufacturing.
it is NOT a stripper clip slot.

First production 264WinMag & 7RemMag bbls were stainless in the white & stamped accordingly.
'70's production 7 digit serial numbered receiver 300WM,7RM,264WM Bbls were blackened stainless & stamped accordingly.

I have over a hundred Rem unmolested 722/721/725/700/Spt78/600/660/Seven/673/XR-100/XP-100/XP-100R/40X's.

Forgive my use of the more common term of clip slot. The USMC clip slot is what actually uses the stripper clips, to the best of my understanding.
"broached" is probably the correct term.
Great collection that I can not even compare to.

I missed the point of the first production and 70's production 7 digit serial numbers...

So then by your information it sounds like the one I sold , which was a 7 mm with a blackened stainless barrel AND a broached receiver that Remington said was of 1967 vintage had a newer barrel setback at sometime or service work by Remington at one time or another. Correct?

Glad to see someone correct this misconception, I have been thinking of posting to correct it myself but have dallied around and never got to it. In Otteson's book The Bolt Action, in the section on 721/722/700 he mentions that it was an aide in the set-up in the manufacturing process, if I recall correctly. Once again I am too lazy to get it out and look it up so that I can quote it - chapter and verse.
But it does irritate me a bit to see it called a stripper clip slot, anyone who has ever used a rifle with a stripper clip would know that it is certainly not for use as a stripper clip slot.
