Cleaning outside case necks

I did a search and could not find a answer. I anneal with a AMP. Is it important to clean the outside of the neck? I use 0000 steel wool and all it seems to do is polish the case. Would using a vibratory do the same?

Try 000 , I use it on brass out of suppressed ball powder loads. Just a couple seconds.

Carbon will not affect the annealing. Personally, I like shiny brass so I cleaned before annealing. Good luck.

I've read somewhere lately to clean them, i.e., a darker case holds more heat, or something like that. I thought it was from AMP, I guess not. Now to figure out where...

I use steel wool also. Why would you want to bake that carbon residue into your neck?

I always clean my brass necks before annealing.

Watch out using steel wool then annealing with an amp. You’ll get a build up of steel wool down in your annealer.

Sorry you had that problem. I've never had that happen to me. But anneal the same day.

My process is to clean the neck then wipe it clean/dry.....Never did experience the green.

I’ve never experienced anything like that. It’s all I’ve used for the past few years for my 6ppc and 30br brass. A couple quick twists and the necks are clean and provides just enough lube for sizing.

Me too, and it took FOREVER to get the solvent off.

The steel wool works great on my necks and shoulder area as well. I found it's better to swap it out often and not use it for extended periods as the carbon does build up in it.

Never once had it change the color of any brass. I do however suggest using it with rubber gloves on because if you use bare hands you will be smelling Krazy Kloth for 3 days on your hands regardless of how many times you wash them.
