After Annealing - Cleaning inside of neck?

I've found that a nylon brush is not quite adequate. I use a few strokes of a bronze brush followed by a nylon brush

Some feel a bronze brush is too harsh for the inside of a case neck and reduces neck tension!

How so? Do you mean that the bronze brush will remove brass, therefore making your necks thinner and with less tension while using the same resizing die afterwards? Or... do you mean doing the cleanup after resizing and increasing the neck diameter?

Never have seen that as a problem.

JLow -probably so, but I don't want to anneal a dirty case or have to ss clean twice.

Interesting - rationale for not annealing a dirty case?

Yep... not interested in burning carbon or other residues into the brass at the annealed areas of the case.
I can see the rationale, but does that really happen? I mean when the round is fired, the temps at the neck would be quite a bit hotter than annealing temps, so by that logic, you should be OK?

I suppose you could go with that logic, but I prefer a perfectly clean case, inside and out. That way, the heat is applied consistently to the case when annealing with no interference by carbon deposits.

Interesting read. Everybody has their own way of doing things that provide the results they are after. Like many things shooting related, there are as many ways to skin a cat as there are cats.

This is a great site. We all benefit from the experimental nature of target shooters that are seeking those one hole groups.

UPDATE: This afternoon I mounted an electric drill in my bench vise chucked up with a Montana Extreme Nylon Bore Brush. These brushes are much tougher than your average nylon bore brush.

I locked the drill power on high and went to cleaning up 100 inside case necks of my recently annealed cases in no time. This is super fast, no more sore hands doing them manually, and the bullets seat butter smooth. I am talking about cleaning up the inside necks of just recently cleaned and annealed un-resized brass.

Thanks for your posts.

Do you mean that the bronze brush will remove brass

No, does not remove brass. I believe in a clean case and primer pocket uniforming!

These two procedures are important to ME! Then comes trimming the case (COAL), then I turn the outside of the neck just to uniform, app .0015 taken off! I use an industrial grade ultra-sonic cleaner, a SS cleaner if I feel the brass is that dirty and requires it, and sometimes will just clean up the case with scotch brite and iniform the primer pocket and reload!

I previously had a similiar conversation like this several months ago!

Super Cleaning the inside of the necks is like putting lube or moly on the inside of the neck. Therefore it makes the bullet enter and exit easier due to less friction, which should affect/change pressure during firing, which will affect your group!

I use a nylon brush with mica powder.

I know you will have to agree that a super clean neck will have less friction on the bullet. Some like it this way and use a .001 tighter neck bushing to compensate!

It's really amounts to what makes YOU happy and confident with your gun and your shooting!

My personal preference is .002 neck tension with brushing the inside of the neck with a nylon brush (electric drill) and mica! Seem to be the perfect combination for me! EVERYONE is different.

I know two well know shooters who solely use Moly bullets! I also know several who don't believe in it! All are Masters, it's whatever makes you happy!
