Remington 1100 won't load a round after first firing

My best friend was given an 1100. It fires the first round and extracts the round, but the bolt stays open and the second round just lays loose as the bolt won't close. It has been thoroughly cleaned. The trigger assembly has been cleaned also.
Where does he go from here?

I believe that there is a small part on the back of the shell carrier that trips the release mechanism when the shell coming out of the magazine hits it. It accomplishes the same thing as manually hitting the action release to chamber a single round. I would start with that.

The carrier dog holds the bolt open after firing with no shell in the magazine tube. Firing a round with a round in the magazine, results in the round from the magazine releasing and making contact with the carrier release tab. The tab releases the carrier dog, the round is lifted and the bolt pushes it into the chamber. 1100's clean and lubed, good ammunition work well.

Follow up,
The first thing, is the cartridge from the magazine being released to the carrier? If it is not, nothing will happen.
Thom said the cartridge is lying loose in the carrier. He is out on the ranch fooling with the cows and I sent all of these messages to him. He will reply, but it will be later today.

If you have the chamber empty( safety on) a round in the magazine. Pull the bolt handle all the way to the rear and release. As you pull you will(can) see the round release from the magazine, it will strike carrier release tab at the rear of the carrier, let go of the bolt and the carrier lifts and the bolt "catches" the round and chambers it. Should be able to identify what isn't happening, round not released from mag, carrier tab not moving, carrier unable to lift the round.

Ask your friend if he has taken the stock off and cleaned up the return spring, spring guide and associated parts on the inside of the stock. If this is a "working gun" that has been outside a lot, you would be surprised how much crap, rust etc, you may find. It is one of those out of sight out of mind places. Even getting in a rain storm, 1 time 20 years ago can get you there.

I don't remember all the workings as it's been a while since I worked on them full time but they're pretty simple to work on. Are we stuck with doing this without seeing anything or are you close enough to get a look at it yourself? I know you are mechanically inclined enough that I bet it's fairly obvious to you if it's in your hand vs trying to do this on a forum. So many times, a simple fix turns into a pissing match where nobody involved has laid eyes on the gun. Lol!

Its a easy fix, I believe. Pop the trigger group out and see if the shell stops and interceptor latch is in good working order. If so check the recoil spring plunger and link. The plungers like to bend and the link binds up.

Thom is cowboying again but will sit down later today to address the problem. I'm sure with all the great help from our members here will get him fixed up. He is a very handy person.

Mike, I think Ringgold, Tex is about 140 miles away. I'll bet with the help from our fellow forum members help he will solve it.
