New Computer in JD's Holler

In my opinion if your computer is outdated or doesn't have the latest updates, you're asking for trouble. Not only bugs and glitches, but from a cyber attack standpoint. Sites are written using HTML usually. If you are using a google chrome browser press (crtl + U.) A TON OF CODE that is used to format the website. I believe The META tagline is how a phone usually gathers information for formatting. That being said, any competent web designer could make a site smartphone friendly.

I use both my phone and my laptop. I only notice small differences in how the site runs on my phone. One thing I have noticed is on a phone I cant see how many views my post has. The other is on the main homepage. it does not format it correctly for my screen and I have to zoom in. This is due to formatting.

the picture is about 1/100 of the code for just this page of the website. accurate shooter html.png

My wife is a former graphics designer, and currently the family geek. She got me started on the Mac thing by giving me one of her old laptops. She's got huge fancy apple stuff that she no longer uses, and pretty much uses her phone for everything.

This new/used Mac I got was a pretty good deal at 800 bucks. I brought it home, and my sweetie transferred my old computer onto the new one in prolly twenty minutes. The computer shop was gonna charge 200 bucks for that service.

So it's been a pretty easy transition for me, and I don't think I'm ready to use my phone for my primary internet access. I don't think you guys prattling would sound the same if I read it on a phone. jd

I'm kind of surprised there aren't more "phone only" people here. I use my phone for pretty much everything...paying bills, shopping, forums, stock trading, etc. I use a computer for work, and that's about it.

You’re right on about the wackos pushing their wacky ideas! There’s this “extremist group” I was reading about that says I need to weigh my primers!
I thought about weighing primers, but thought better of it. I use the water volume method using alcohol because it doesn't have a meniscus.

This is my work station, I do use a computer most of the tim (LOL TIME) but this is upload from my phone.

In one respect, computers are a great way to research things you need to know about. But, in an even greater respect, they are poison - a tool used to shape the public's opinion on important items, a way to publish propaganda, manipulate our thought process.

But then, that's always been the case. A butter knife's good for poking holes in butter and carotid arteries with equal ease. A gun's good for poking holes in paper targets and animal flesh ... The printing press, telephony and computers have merely eased the ability of people to spread their messages, wonky or righteous, important or threatening. Sure places a premium on discernment as a useful skill for everyone.

As I mentioned earlier, I use my phone for pretty much everything...mostly for convenience. But I do build gaming systems for friends and family. The first one I built for my daughter who is a gaming nerd. The other one I did for a friend.

So my old MacBook Pro was a cast-off that my wife gave me. It's ten years old, and the battery is finally toast. I made a few calls, and found that to have the battery replaced would be not only expensive, but - well, stupid. Soooo, I let them sell me a '2019' MacBook Air, which is very close to the same function and features that my old one had.

This new computer seems to have the same problems that the other one had, making me sound even dumber than I actually am. I'm also sorry to find that my typing skills suck as badly with this one as they did with the last. I'd like to ask up front that I not be held responsible for many of the things that might spew forth from this thing.

This whole deal got me to wondering just how many of our members here use only a phone to access the forum, and -- I guess everything else in the cyber world. It seems that many people no longer use or even own a computer these days. I've also got a new I-Phone recently, and am pretty proficient with it, but it just doesn't seem handy for here on the forum. And yeah, I'm almost old. jd
I use my iphone as little as possible to access webpages, any. Screen real estate is just to small. We have a MAC desktop at home with a huge Thunderbird mac monitor. I bought both nearing 10 years ago and both are going strong. I got sick and tired of having to replace cheap-crap Chinese Hewlett Packards every three years. Ya I know they are made in China but to much higher standards of component quality and manufacture. I used to be plagued with dead pixels in laptop and desktop windows monitors. Not a single solitary one in the T Bird monitor after all these years. Screw windoze crap! :)

The big Dell monitors made a few years ago were excellent. not the 4 k kind but 2560x1440 are excellent. I have a 27 inch. I gave my mac screen to a buddy for 150 dollars about. it needed a power pack to run it. funky technology but great screen. I have a 13 year old Mac Pro, cheese grater. it keeps going. I accidentally upgraded it one time, damn near ruined the entire box. It was hell getting it back to former OS. Apple and MS DO NOT like older systems.

One thing I like about the macapple thing is how the computer and phone mesh and compliment each other with the "Cloud". I take pics on may phone, and they go straight to my photo library on the computer. Music, pretty much the same.

I don't know if android/PC has anything like that. Fact is, there's waaayy more that I don't know, than what I do know about all this stuff. jd

Smart phones are small computers you can carry in your pocket and make phone calls on too.

I work in IT and only use a pc when I can't perform the task at hand efficiently with my phone.

I am a newbie from way back......weigh bullets..check......weigh powder charge....double check.....check case volume....check. Primer weight WTF!

I had an 27 inch iMac that I used since 2009. It seemed to be running slightly slower than when new at times, but still worked darn good until the graphics card went bad. New cards are no longer available and rebuilt ones are expensive. Since I take advantage of the 27 inch screen I wanted to have a 27" screen, I replaced it with the Mac Studio with the with M chip and the Mac Studio display. It didn't take long to find out the M chip and the current OS doesn't support many older applications that operate using 32 bit software. That was a bummer.

The computer is fast though and the monitor is awesome. At times, I can enlarge an image and still use a magnifying glass to see things I can't otherwise read.

Most computer makers don't really care much about backward compatability, as I think they expect most will be up on the cutting edge of software. JMO.

I tend to agree. In the case of apple they developed a new chip architecture that works with their system so well it doesn't function with the slower OS's.

It is light years ahead in design and didn't make sense to require a secondary system that was being left behind.
