JEEP Vehicles in Winter

Baloney. I drove thru 10" of snow with my 06 Subaru two weeks ago. They have higher ground clearance than you think. My 15 and my girls 24 have even higher ground clearance with the taller tires.

No offense but a Subaru can’t do what a Jeep can do. There is a reason you don’t see any Subaru vehicles on Truck Night in America (the ultimate off roading show). Not saying your vehicle doesn’t do everything you said, or everything you need it to do; just saying it’s likely not going to do what a Jeep would do.

Your right off road no Subaru could do what a Jeep can. All I'm saying is with 8.7" of ground clearance you can go thru more than 3 or 4" of snow. I bet you my bottom dollar that under snowy driving conditions a Subaru Outback will outperform any Jeep.

I can’t say this enough. If you are going out in weather conditions that most people shouldn’t drive in, you better have the following in your truck:
1. Winch
2. Proper tow rope
3. Jumper cables and battery pack
4. Extra food and water
5. Extra coat, blankets, gloves, hat

In addition to your list I bought a small Stihl chainsaw ( pee wee ) I keep on board as well as a small ax and fire starter, first aid stuff etc.

I know they do quite well in the snow and clearly not going to change your mind, but there is a reason why you don’t see the true off road guys using Subaru vehicles….just give that some thought. I’m sure there are many Jeep drivers that live near you that would be glad to go toe to toe with you in the snow, sand or mud. Perhaps then you’d have a true appreciation for what a Jeep vehicle can do.

I'm the last house on a private road on the side of a small mountain. I have no choice sometimes because I rely on the other people to get their part of the road plowed out which sometimes doesn't happen. I wouldn't make a habit out of driving in 10" but it can be done.

10" of snow ain't 15 inches of snow. If you feel confident driving in 15 inches of snow, have at it.

But don't call me to come pull you out with my 4Runner.

I've had a quite a few 4x4s in the last 50 years. First was an FJ40. Still have it, ... on it's 4th motor ( 3rd SBC). My son now drives that one and I still drive another, .. 1975 vintage, ... again with a SBC. Definitely my go to in snow, mud and rough stuff. Winches, chains, shovel, highlift jack, lockers, extra clothes, firestarter, etc. standard in both.

Have had several 4x4 pickups, F150, F250 (still have that one) and F350. Tools for work and play.

That said, I have had three different Subarus and they were excellent for wintertime driving on maintained roads., ... up to and including heavy snow.

They all have their place and uses, ... and shining moments.

It all boils down to "Dirty Harry"! "A man's got to know his limitations"

Dave I agree with you as far as going off road or in the mud but I've driven Jeeps in the winter. My girl had a Rubicon when she first came to live with me in 2012. I've driven many a Jeep when I was younger and they are not as good as a Subaru for general driving in the snow.

Just sold My 2015 JKU Rubicon Hard Rock. It had 876xx miles and only needed plugs changed, other than oil, and fluids. It was fun to drive and decent on gas. They seem to hold their resale value like Toyotas.

Jeeps consistently have the highest resale value of any vehicle on the road. Every year.

Had a 74 CJ5, V8-304, 3spd manual, with the metal hardtop, from about 1978 to 1992, it was a love hate relationship. Did some hairy stuff with it 4 wheeling in AB & BC, had a few hairy moments with it on highway too. They do like to short wheelbase on themselves on icy roads, amazing how fast they can do that when least expected. Put an aux htr between the seats, Detroit locker in the back, installed power steering, uprated the springs. Had one trip in -40F weather that I turned around and went home again, even with a winterfront and belly tarp, couldn't get enough heat, windows wouldn't defrost, one of those "this is a lost cause" days. I did take that thing to some strange and wonderful places though, more than a few moments when I questioned my sanity in going there, scared the krap out of a few passengers. Number of times when the winch was the only way to move it, or hold it from rolling back down a hill, saved a few other people's butts too. It was a lot of fun, learned a lot, still enjoy scaring passengers as there is stuff I learned in driving it, that I know I can do with the Taco too. Some things the CJ did better, some things the Taco does better, although, I haven't stuffed two moose in the Taco yet.
