Do it yourself Stock making thread

That's a really, really cool thing you're doing there. Your friend is lucky to have you for a friend.

My fault for not asking before jumping to conclusions. My apologies.
Thanks! I did have one guy ask for a long action cut. A month later, it was short action. Then back to long. I can’t remember what I finally cut.

Back in the shop after some days off. I have a couple projects to do but my resolution is to shoot more. I put scopes back on some builds that only have 50 test loads thru them. Then I putzed on a couple projects that kept getting pushed forward.
I bought an Elisio to try, but it was in a 270 WSM. I’m old, it kicks so I pulled it apart and made it a 308.

Then I pulled apart my 30br hunting gun. Turned out my troubles stemmed from a bad chamber job. While I wait for a rechamber, I’ll shoot it as a 308. I had a factory 308 5R barrel so I put it on and cut the stock for AICS bottom metal. I have some converted BR mags to use when I get that barrel back.

Then I did a shop clean up to get ready for the next stocks. I gave a nice kid a 270 Remington Nick sold me for dirt cheap. He wants a stock.
I had that 270 WSM barreled action sitting on the bench. I dug thru my pile and found a half finished stock I think will work with it.
I’ll pick at those two stocks, but every Friday is for shooting!

Josh, you can't show those stocks after all of these years. Still doing great work. Keep it up. Still interested in some form of the fancy grain on the outside laminate.

Where do you find wood big enough to make a gun stock . thickness isn't the problem but every thing is all small pices .

Some sawyers will cut to order; but then there is the drying time. Some years ago, I found and purchased 6-7 blanks from Winslow Arms before the last owner and stockmaker passed. I split them with a friend and have used two. Recently found a nice one of figured maple on e bay.

You might try old farms with old barns, Look at sill beams of very old houses. You never know what you might come across. Some might be useful some not. I have beautiful heart pine big enough to make stocks from, but way too heavy. I have a complete cherry tree cut 30 or so years ago, not thick enough unless laminated. I’m always on the lookout for big chunks or slabs.

ETA Old pianos are a good source of decent wood, not always the right sizes, but decent wood.

I have a pile my Dad and I put up, 50 years ago.;)
Specialty lumber mills are all over the states. Look at Hearne’s. They sell good stuff.
There’s a guy “oldhelilogger” on this site that sells nice blanks. There’s also a guy in Australia. Google “rifle stock blanks for sale”. The internet is your oyster!

Who makes the best cheek riser hardware?
I need something that goes pretty high. Might be a matter of making my own pins once I get the clamp part.
I'm also thinking incorporate an adjustable bag rider from Long Shot Precision.

I'm really considering taking a stab at this, I'm also thinking of giving it a try with some cheapo lumber to see how it goes before ruining an expensive piece of wood. I've not got much for wood working tools and haven't dabbled in years.

Figure I can do the majority of the barrel channel and action inlet using a router and going slow, oversize the inlet a bit and basically fix it with pillars and a bedding job. Thinking I'll keep the design pretty simple and parallel but should look cool with the adjustable bits coming off it.

You can find some nice plain exotics for fairly cheap. A three foot long piece of Mohagany 2 1/4” x 12” will cost you about $100 and yield 2 blanks. It makes a nice stock for $50.
I’ll mention this, too. If you start the project with the attitude of “it’s OK to screw this one up, it’s just a junk piece of wood” you probably will screw it up. Start with a nice piece of wood and carefully follow the instructions laid out in the beginning of this thread , you’ll do OK and have a good stock for your efforts.

Sold out on the site. I sent him an email we'll see what he says.

My thoughts were more to get my process and order of operations down but you do pose a good point that I'm less likely to screw it up if it's supposed to be the final product. I might go looking for some wood soon here. If I go through with it I'll post up pics.
