Will the 6PPC Ever Be Surpassed in the Short Range Benchrest Game ?

I have too much time on my hands. I have been out of the 100/200 LV/HV benchrest game for over 15 years now. I'm just about ready to retire and was thinking about taking another look at that game. I still look at NBRSA and IBS match results from time to time and it seems like the 6PPC will never be a "has been" in short range benchrest competition. I guess that's why I shot it back then. Heck, I still have 1 8-lb unopened jug of VV N133 (marked 7.5.2008) plus a few 1-lb'ers. I, like everybody else, love the 6PPC. But you just have to wonder what's coming down the pike. I keep thinking about putting together another 10.5 lb. gun as I sold all my guns back then (kept all my reloading stuff). I'm older, not necessarily wiser, more profitable, and have a lot more insurance. I wish there were more "stock options" like there was 20-30 years ago.

Please chime in with any passing thoughts.

Thanks

There are other calibers that are capable of shooting just as accurate. Some are even easier to tune and keep in tune, but the 6 ppc will remain the first choice for benchrest shooters. Several reasons. Quality brass, proper capacity to bore ratio, low recoil, great powder selection, and we tend to follow the leaders in the sport. I'm sure there are other reasons, but I have given more than enough reasons.

It seemed like back in the 60's when I was growing up, there was a wider variety of cartridges that you would see on the firing line. I guess it's a lot like NASCAR. I just hope that AI (artificial intelligence) doesn't make it's way into the sport. I think that would take the romance out of the pursuit of the "one hole group".

At 100, I don’t see it being dethroned. I do think as time goes on you’ll see more BR variants with heavier bullets at 200.

Someone is always working on a better mousetrap… and someday they’ll succeed!
Not in most people's lifetime. Same with the 30BR in short range score. There are a bunch of 30 cal variants and a few who toot their horn that the variant they use in just as good and that's BS because if it was so good most people would be shooting it on a regular basis. I know because I have 5 30 caliber variants and none of them come close to a plain Jane 30BR, NONE!

and which 5 variants would that be?

6MM ARC................????
First of all...welcome back to BR shooting. :)

The 6ARC is really just a SAMMI version of the 6PPC...almost identical. I'm sure it would work well but after everything was said and done, you'd still end up with what effectively is a 6PPC.

The sheer number of 6PPCs being used in SR Benchrest Group make it unlikely to be displaced any time soon. Like the 30BR in Score shooting...the 6PPCs just work too well in that form of competitive shooting.

Good shootin' -Al

30BR, 30BRX. 30 Jag2,(30X47 with 35 degree shoulder and a few minor body changes). 30 Gorilla, (30 Grendel 35 degree shoulder). 30 Thrasher, ( Joe Entrekin's Pet Project. (50 thousandths long BR case or 50 thousandths shorter 30 Dasher. You run a 30 Dasher reamer in half way).

With the exception of the Gorilla, the other three variants were hardly developed as a short range caliber.
I am not arguing with the comment about 30BR, but IMO you are comparing apples to oranges.

Is that right. The 30x47 was used in short range hunter class for many years and same with the 30BRX. Smokin Joe came up with his project for SR score so tell me that I'm wrong Jack.

We're at the point in SR Benchrest where advancements are pretty hard to find...from a cartridge standpoint.

It's amazing that we as humans are able to shoot these guns as well as we do when you consider everything that's going on between the bench and the target. -Al

Take a deep breath. lol.
Hunter class bullet weight might not agree, and the powder column ratios /case capacity of the others do not lend themselves to SR.
Enjoy the variants, but they are not in SR BR for a reason
