Dust off your Deuce

Early morning or just before dark it is usely calm .
Yep, wasn’t the case here during May and June, windy all day. we Usually have a lot of wind here in March, monsoons usually start by the first week of July, the wind came late and we still aren’t having monsoons. Last year was the monsoon season in a decade, we could use something, it’s burning up.

After several months of trying I wasn't able to get my 222 to shoot worth a darn. I wound up not shooting the targets. Come to find out the barrel is rougher than a night in jail. It's gotta go. Scott, I'm sending you some money to cover your cost. Hopefully next year I'll have a decent 222.

I think you would been surprised how many guns are off, at least from what we expect from them. I hope I ain't the only one that way that still turned them in,,,, missery loves company! ;)

Just finished my last 2 tonight.
Boy, did I have a tough time.
My gun generally shoots really well with
H4198 and a 52gr berger.
I ran out of 4198, and everything went south in a hurry.
I had to start all over. Started with 4895
And I couldn't put a group together that didn't look like turkey shot.
Was running out of that pound only to discover no more of that lot #. (Thank god)
A different lot # and back to some really nice groups.
So, I shot the targets. I really ruined a couple of the groups. They will be in the mail in the morning.
It really made me get out and shoot when I wouldn't have. Sometimes I need that.

Thank you, Scott

It sounds like me everyone having problems . I usely shoot pretty good groups but when I shoot in a Match I come in last place , but I don't have a $5000 dollar gun ether But my gun will shoot in the 1' if I do my part . I didn't shoot very good in this match ether .

I know I hardly ever shoot groups as good in a match as the ones I post from shooting when I'm not in a match. We don't post the Heartbreakers.

When I'm in a match shooting 5, 5 shot groups, one or two good ones mean very little when two or three are big groups. Match competition is more about not shooting those really big ones, than it is about shooting all really little ones.

Most friends I shoot with think they shoot as good, or better, tha the competitors that shoot every month or more than one match a month. But when they try it in actual competion. Shooting 5 targets in a row, in a timed fashion, like the rest of us, it becomes a humbling experience very quickly.

It quickly becomes apparent to those that watch all those tiny groups posted on forums and social media realize, that is not the common group, but those groups we are so proud of are needed to make up for the one or two we don't want to post!

Once in a while most can put it together to squeeze 5 in a row out with a couple beauties to prevail. But for most that seldom shoot 5 disciplined groups in a row, can show up in a match, and have that all come together. But those that are willing to show up time and time again to be sent home humbly, will enjoy that match when the stars do finally align, and smile on them.

This is why I enjoy matches, they're humbling, and now and then, I am extreemly satisfied, those are what brings me back time and time again.

Well I got repeat visits by ole Murphy myself. His first visit I forgot my reloading box- weather was perfect. Next attempt, the bore guide tip broke off in the chamber and I couldn't remove it with tools at hand -weather was perfect. Next attempt, I was blocked access to my range by PSP due to Nascar race at Pocono and I left my flags at the camp range so another range was not an option. Previous years it was no problem if you got to camp early hours before the race. (BTW weather was perfect). 4th try, perfect conditions (for me) -a consistent mild R to L push, mild mirage, and was GTG with tuning and ready to do a warm-up target and Murphy's back - I stuck a case in the die (his fault ,not mine) and quickly evident it was not going to happen that afternoon- ended up with severe downpours anyway. OK, still have time. But, #2 son calls and asks me to help with a construction project he has to finish. Just as well as late last week got really hot and that means hordes of deer flies are waiting to attack.
I REALLY wanted to do this since my HV .222 has set idle since 2015 and I missed participation in the Postal League since my BR career began after it's demise. I, too hope this is contested again next year and will be sending the OP funds to cover the initial mailing costs.

Looks like you shot pretty good to me. How is that Savage set up?
On a old junky maple stock . Rifle Basic trigger , Weaver 24X scope , Brux Barrel 1:14 twist no barrel nut , with a tuner that I don't know much about . Picture shows a B&L scope but has a Weaver 46 X on it now .

I had not checked in on this thread for quite a while. I got several chuckles over the “reasons” of difficulty.
Snerts comment I damn near spit my coffee out, brutally honest, lol.
Dust off the Deuce. Sounds like that hit the nail on the head for sure. Imagine there are thousands of neglected 222’s around.
I bet we see more load work, bench prep, barrel replacement or complete builds in the coming months with 222.

I need to get 20-30 empty cases set aside myself so I will have something to tinker with the next go around.
Howa mini, factory 222 varmint, in a Boyd’s pro varmint stock. Buddy has modified the Howa triggers, need to get this one done. May as well bed it while it’s torn down.

Look forward to more comments folks.

I would like to thank Scott for sponsoring this event. I have never done anything like this before and it is as much about how well you reload as it is how well you shoot.
I have the luxury of shooting at a range in my friends woods so wind was not an issue. I have 3 222’s but l used the one l had built for P/D hunting. I didn’t set the world on fire, but it was a lot of fun. After all that’s what it should be about. IMG_3258.jpeg

I’m the procrastinator of the bunch. Although I had some legitimate reasons I didn’t get my targets off till Thursday, sent them 2 day UPS and totally understand if they don’t make it in time. I had fun and would like to thank Scott too, pretty cool thing to do. I have a few 222s, most vintage factory rifles and one custom Remington my wife uses when we’re calling yotes. I ended up using my Tikka Master sporter which shoots better than I can shoot, the rifle loves H4198 and BadGrass 52 grain bullets. Thanks again Scott!
