257 Roberts AI Gunsmith

I called my gunsmith to see if he could chamber a barrel in 257 Roberts for my TL3 and he did not have a reamer. He is able to chamber a barrel without the TL3 action which saves me the drama of shipping my action. Knowing there are a lot of older gunsmiths here I would like to reach out to see if any of you have a reamer. Please let me know if you are interested or if you have any recommendations for a good gunsmith that can help me out.

If your gunsmith is your trusted choice, just have him call 4D or Reamer Rentals to rent this reamer short term. This is the growing method of getting a chamber reamer without the wait and increased cost from the manufacturers.

Give Kevin Weaver a call, I'd be shocked if Kevin doesn't have that reamer and he does good work. Kevin has about the most extensive list of reamers I know of.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I did some more research, and it sounds like I should be building this on a Long Action to take advantage of the better bullets we have today, so I am going to hold off until I get the correct action for the build.

One of my favorites. And yes a long action is much better. But then a 25-06 AI comes into play. Another good one. I have reamers for both.

Are you looking for anything specific? I have a chromoly LA Rem 700, standard bolt face, that's already been trued by Karl Kampfeld. I'll have to look but I may have had Karl flute the bolt too. If you're interested PM me if not no worries.

I'm looking at building a 25 SAUM to shoot the 133/134/135's and after talking to Frank Green w/Bartlein barrel I'll be using an 8tw.

Thanks to everyone that replied. I did some more research, and it sounds like I should be building this on a Long Action to take advantage of the better bullets we have today, so I am going to hold off until I get the correct action for the build.

A medium action would work also.

Kevin does GREAT work in my opinion. If it was me, I would pick a 25 Creedmoor over a 257 AI. 30 degree shoulder and brass is much easier to find (not even considering the substantial performance improvement).

7.5 twist is what I'd think for around 2950-3150 with those 130 class .257 bullets. I'm running a 7.5 for 3200 and it's great. I think an 8 twist would be fine for a .257 magnum cartridge pushing the bullet 3200-3500.

I think a 1:7 or 1:8. I don’t reload but like the Hornady superformance.

When I contacted Hornady their Tech told me 8.5tw for their new 134's but to be on the safe side and in anticipation of a 140-ish A-Tip with .700+ BC I went ahead and ordered a new 8tw .257 barrel today.

Once again, I would like to thank everyone for your comments.

I received a PM regarding using Wyatts magazines to lengthen a Remington 700 short action that I have rather than going long action. I am not sure of the gunsmith costs to modify the action and stock to accommodate the longer magazine or box for longer bullets to function correctly. My question is cost vs gain. Do you think it would be better doing modifications to the Short action or getting the long action considering that I would need to get a stock with either option.

The 3.100 Baney box in a Rem 700 doesn't require a great deal of action work but some modifications are required. It'll still use the same BDL hinged floor plate so no stock modifications are needed.

I can appreciate wanting a particular cartridge just because but in regard to performance, ease, and cost affectiveness you could simply put a extended 3.00 mag box in your current SA Rem 700, which would require next to no action work, and go 25-284. Necking down Lapua 6.5-284 brass is one pass going from .264 to .257, far better quality then any brass you'll find for a 257 Bob, no fire forming that'll use up valuable and potentially hard to get components, and will easily equal of surpass the performance of the Bob.

I understand sometimes we just want what we want and nothing else matters so if that's the case and a 257 Bob improved is what you have your heart set on then that's what you should build, but, if there is any wiggle room in your plan/s the 25-284 is definitely one to consider, even more so if you plan on shooting these new heavy for caliber .257 boolits.
