.257 Roberts Ackley Improved

???
What's "very sense"? Lol

Sweaterdood,

I got some Norma MRP to play with in my 284 Win. Had to go 100 miles to find some, and that was before the current shortages.
Then someone tells me it's the same as RL22.

To keep with the 257AI thread..
Still waiting on USPS to deliver my barrel. Was supposed to be here 12/8.
I saw news report that aside from their warehouses being full, there are tractor trailers still loaded waiting to be processed. 10 trailers & growing at the Philly facility.

I found a Savage 111 in 270 Win on closeout that i put on lay-a-way. First Savage i'll have bought that has a 3 position safety & AccuTrigger.

Plan is to ream chamber to 257 Roberts AI, and Boyds stock. Trying to keep weight down.

Happy holidays to everyone!
My case volume is right there with a 284 case, since I can seat the bullets way out. I run what is essentially a 257AI cartridge but with custom chamber/throat/leade geometry.

I have also heard that MRP is the same formula as RL22, but a much tighter tolerance is placed on it. Supposed to be very consistent from lot to lot. I did find that it went from slight pressure signs to MAX! pretty quickly, so when you see ejector marks or web expansion, proceed with extra caution. Velocities are impressive though.

Day after Christmas & the barrel has finally arrived, that i bought off of Cemetery21.
Freak'n USPS!
It did arrive in good condition!
Took 30 minutes to cut all the tape & bubble wrap. :D
24" Savage sporter E.R. Shaw barrel in 257 Roberts.

Plan is to ream the chamber to Ackley Improved & install on Savage 111 that is currently on lay-a-way.
Change out factory stock to a Boyds.
EGW 20 MOA one piece picitinny base.
Vortex Viper low rings.
Sightron SI Field Target 4-12X40 with MOA2 reticle.

Should push the 115gr Berger VLD-H loud & proud!

Don't be mad Jeff.
This is my cheap build.
And you know my weakness is hunting rifles. Especially 25 caliber.

The expensive build is my daughters 7mm Mauser. And that started with a $65 donor gun.

Have you considered a .250 AI? PO Ackley considered that one of his most successful Ackley's. With the right powder you are well into 25-06 velocities upwards of 3250 FPS w/ 100 gr tips. Anything longer though will cut into case capacity but its an amazingly efficient cartridge using 15 gr less powder than a 25-06 w/ a 100 gr bullet.
I have a really nice Savage Custom Shop 250 and keep mulling over the idea of having it re chambered to 250 AI but havent pulled the trigger on it. I vowed to never again do an Ackley after all the fireforming, etc. w the .223 and 260 AI I've built... lol.

Since the .250 AI is so close dimensionally to the 25 CM, it would be much simpler to go with the CM for components, just a bushing swap from 6.5mm to .257” (same with .260 Rem to 25 Souper...). Not to mention better brass options in the CM.

Heritage, Sweaterdood, heritage..
That and being different.
The 250 AI, 257 Roberts AI, 25 Souper isn't something seen at band camp everyday.

And with the 131gr Black Jack Ace & new 135gr Berger Hybrid Target, then the 25-284 and 25-350 Rem Mag become interesting options.

Since this thread started, I built a couple 25 Krag Ackley rifles:
1) Low pressure in a Krag action.... ok, but Ackley formed cases will not feed. Need the shoulders reduced a few thousands.
2) High pressure in a Mosin action.... spit shoulders on the cases, but the buck died.

I throw up the bullhorns and rock out to different jams. That’s why I run a (s)lowly Ackley-Bob. Had a couple gents rather intrigued by it at the range today.

I meant to say they the Creed AND Souper have better brass options than the 250AI. If I were building off of the mouser action and had the extra length available, Souper all the way. With the 131, you could run at the “high” ~2950 node at lower pressure than the CM.

From what I’ve been seeing the next node doesn’t occur until just over 3100, and you’d need to step up to a larger case to get there. The .284 would be the pick for brass quality and it could also hit the 3200ish node, but like mine, you’d be tiptoe-ing the pressure limit. These speeds also need 1:7.7 - 1:8 twists too. I can’t let my 25-06AI run like she wants to, because I couldn’t resist a 1:7tw, chambered, threaded and crowned for $300... brass will last forever though.

Ability to size 260 Rem brass from Peterson to 250 Savage? Fireform afterwards, obviously.
Seems like some work, but not a huge amount for quality brass.

Getting this from Hornady brass in standard 250 Savage at 200 meters off a bipod. 5 shot group.
Varmint bullet, not a high BC match bullet
Waiting for reamer & headspace gages to ream my 257 Roberts to Ackley Improved. .

Promising, bring that thing to show tell this summer.

Currently have a .257 Roberts on a Remington action. The barrel is about done in and I would like to have it re barreled. I like the idea of an Ackley because it's not common. That may be what is getting me into trouble! My gunsmith does not have the reamer, only a standard one. I can either buy the reamer, 8 week waiting period, or split it with him and he keeps the reamer. I have a nice set of Forster bench rest dies that I would have to replace. Do not know if you can just buy the sliding tube in the seating die or if you can just use it. Does it fit the case that precisely? Loading dies are a bit pricey and no one has them in stock.

Not trying to ask is the Ackley worth it from a velocity standpoint. That has been hashed around before. And no, I do not think the .25/06 is sexy enough. I know there are other Ackley nuts out there. A few of my shooting friends think I am nuts but it just sounds "cool."

Has anyone out there built an Ackley or wish they hadn't?

Did my .257AI in the 90's. It had a long -28"- barrel 1-1/4" straight, braked, in a wide benchrest stock. I used it to destroy rockchucks with 87TNT's and it did so very admirably. The .257AI was really a good one, I just stopped using it and gave the barrel/dies/reamer/loading data to a friend. Reason for that is I'd gone to a .257WBY for chucks which does an even more admirable job on them, but that AI was/is a very good cartridge.
