USPS getting snoopy

Went to get a couple money orders today, and before they would sell them to me, I had to state what I planned to purchase with them. She could tell that I was wondering why she asked that, and told me she has to ask, to be sure that I wasn't using the funds to purchase anything I shouldn't be. Since the money was for a scope, I said without thinking, "for a rifle scope". Ooops... Then came the funny looks and personal opinion that that was a lot of money for a scope ($1,400). Yes and no, scopes are anywhere between $150-4,000 I explained, depending on the brand, quality, features and magnification.

She still wasn't printing out the money order... Her- "what are you going to use it for?"
Me- "Target practice." Her- "what kind of targets?" Me - "Paper" Her- "you are buying a $1,400 scope to shoot paper?" Me-"Yes" Her- "Where are you buying this from?" Me- "private individual." Her- "If we think you are going to use this to do something illegal, we can't sell it to you" Me- Rifle scopes are not illegal to buy, and neither is shooting paper." This went on and on and on, even to the point of her wanting to know if I was "some kind of a sniper"!!

I actually think she may not have sold me the money order, if there wasn't 10 people in line behind me giving her a slew of disapproving looks. How sad, no one trusts anyone anymore.

This new USPS criminal task force is as ridiculous as US Bank requiring your Drivers License, current employment information, and the answer to the question of where the money came from when depositing over $499 in cash into your own account. Why? So they can red flag and track any accounts that are getting too much money put into them from unknown sources and report them. The bank police.

Geez! I'm getting tired of every place I go, everything I do, see, and search getting logged, tracked, flagged and reported. Talk about making you feel accused and questionable. I'm not doing anything wrong, so I'm not worried about it, but it sure does feel like a few bad apples are spoiling it for the rest of us, as well as giving everyone and their dog an unlimited excuse to spy on me and my stuff. Rude.

I do like all the cool things we have right now, but they sure come at a high price. I grew up in the 70's and 80's, and I wouldn't trade it for the world. In fact, I'm totally ready to go back to muscle cars, security cameras mostly only in James Bond movies, keggers on the mountain, Penthouse magazine for.. the articles, phones connected to walls, only 4 clear and two fuzzy channels on the T.V and small towns where people wave as they go by because it's nice to be friendly to folks you don't even know. The good 'ol days.

I gotta find me a Delorian...

today i logged into my Mastercard account and there was a security notice, that i should call them as soon as possible, so i did. I found out there is a charge for $36 and change i didnt make. they asked me a bunch of identifying questions and when i couldnt remember a couple they said i would have to send copies of my drivers licence , social security card and i dont know what else as i didnt listen after hearing that. i told them i wasnt sending anything and if they couldnt verify me over the phone or online somehow i didnt need their card and i dont. bye bye bank

I have fun when I go to the post office to mail packages. When the clerk starts to get a little too nosey I ask them the show me the DDM, (Domestic Mail Manual) where it says I can't mail my package. Or I will ask for the supervisor or postmaster. I am a retired postmaster with 34 years of service.

Had a similar experience when shipping a scope for repair , and when the double digit I.Q. Bimbo got to her third question , violating my privacy Rights , I asked for her Supervisor . At which point , without batting a fake eye-lash she says , "He isn't here today" . The guy behind here says , "Who isn't here today"? It's the Supervisor . Hee-hee-hee . Explained my issue to him , and the more involved it got , the madder he was getting , as He glared at her . Long story , shorter . He finished my transaction in just a couple of minutes while she stood there squirming . And when done , He looked at her and said , "Come with Me" ! In a not very nice tone . Guess she got some advanced training .

"If you must know,it's for my new prosthetic"......

"But I feel like you're singling me out, which is very embarrassing",loud enough that everyone in line can hear...

"I'm filing a formal complaint"

And then,DO make a formal complaint. Many ways to stop this BS. You just need to put some pre thought into it. Put the ball fully in their court. But thanks for the headsup.
I shipped a rifle to an FFL and presented a copy of the license to the employee. He looked confused and called the guy at the next window who came over and told me that I as an individual couldn't ship a firearm. We got into it a bit and I told him he didn't know the rules and the law. He didn't like my response and told me he'd come around and throw me out. I'm 82 years old and invited him to bring it on then left and shipped it UPS. I filed a complaint and never got a response.
I may be 82. but I'm still quick and know exactly where to hit an assailant. Too bad he didn't come around that counter~!!

I have always had good dealings with USPS. I purchased a stripped lower receiver while on a business trip in Houston. I put it in a flat rate box and had bill of sale and the Postal rules printed out to show the worker that it was legal to mail one to yourself. I didn’t even get to speak before she says “close that box up, I don’t care what’s unit it as long as it is not flammable, perishable or liquid. “

Sounds right for Texas. Never had any problems here.

the more you know....:D

I haven't had any problems with the local USPS, but live in a rural area. UPS on the other hand... shit show at times.

They're all over the place here and can be a royal PITA on homes with wood siding, ask how I know.

Dave,
That had nothing to do with the USPS it was the individual behind the counter. I have several times in the last year bought MO at the post office and they never ask questions.
I would do some digging and report that individual to post master general for that area.

Three year old thread, but I still am with the majority here whom have had issues.
All I will say is, I have shipped a LOT of “machine parts”. Nothing illegal mind you, I give a wide answer to a wide question.

Once asked what kind of machine parts, I replied it was a flux capacitor that needed repair. Person had narry a clue, then proceeded with the flammable, perishable…..question.

Well I actually hope you got an advanced foot right up the ass and lost her job

I once was sending a shotgun in for repair. The local postal clery, yes a woman, asked what was in it and like a fool I said a shotgun for repair. She said I couldn't send it. I told, not asked, her to see her supervisor. She came back and said I can but it has to be broken down. What a crock. I said it was cause it was. Give some a little authority and they think they rule the world.

I had never shipped a long gun with USPS so I stopped at the PO in Grimes Iowa and asked the counterperson what was needed. She told me I could not ship it and that I needed to go with a different carrier. She actually told me I had to ship it with FedEx or UPS.

I went to the Waukee PO and talked to the Postmaster. He said as long as it was going to a dealer I could ship it. I asked if I needed to tell them it was a firearm and he said no. He told me to cover any markings on the box that identified it as a firearm.

The Waukee PO fellow knows his rules, the woman...clueless. It pays for us to know them, then just ship it.

Old thread but here's my random thought. I'm actually SUPER grateful to all the gun companies that DON'T put the word RIFLE, GUN, SHOOTING or anything shooting sport related in their name because it makes life so much easier when I throw a pre-paid package on the counter and walk away. Just last week I had to ship to Defiance and luckily they're Defiance Machine so the UPS guy scanned it and said thanks, end of story. Potentially a different outcome if the label said Remington Firearms.
