9 twist 20cal. what chamber? what bullet?

I have 2, bartlein 9 twist 20 cal barrels. trying to decide what to chamber them in.

the info

the barrels are 9 twist, 27in.

my location and altitude is il and 600ft

(thought that might play a role in bullet selection)

trying to decide on chamber and bullet.

what's your favorite and experience with such?

20-250?

20xc?

20br ,bra?

heck why not 20-220 swift ,haha.

40 grainers?

55? will 9 twist stabilize?

Welllll, do you like to tinker w brass in the winter or do you prefer shooting and shooting and shooting?
What is the end use? Squeak Fields, pdogs or the occasional lllinois chuck/yote or 90% bench gun?
Do you feel comfy w 100 pcs of brass or would 2k be down your alley?
If forming, trimming, reaming, turning then fireforming W green Dot or similar plus primers is FUN, have at it.
If high volume use is expected, you will need both bbls if you go w the high capacity cases.
If you go very far off std chambering, reamers and die wait times can be problematic.
I have a Duster reamer and a VT on the shelf and a good bud has a 20 Tac.
All in all a 20 Prac is so easy peasy......
I'm also thinking a 20ppc would fill the bill as well. Same/same as the Prac for case work up. That just occurred to me BUT . . . those reamers aren't as plentiful. Then there is the bolt face......
Choices are nice, eh?

PS. 55 gr may/may not stabilize in a 9tw buttoned bbl. I've read of mixed results. A true 9tw cut would prob work. No prac experience here.

I guess you need to ask yourself just how much powder do ya want to burn, and how fast do you want to burn out your barrels. All the points that TAJ45 mentions are very helpful also. jd

@TAJ45
the action is a mausingfield sa, and I have both 223 and 308 bolt face
I also have a 21st century lathe and an annie anealer so forming cases isn't an issue either.
probably be 50/50 coyote, bench gun.
maybe some other varmints.

I have 20br and 20-250 both have Pacnor 9 twist barrels and both shoot the 55 Bergers great and I'm in Ohio at 699'.
I use mine mostly for groundhogs and occasionally for coyotes, I've taken ground hogs past 600 yards with both also have used both on coyotes with the 55 Bergers with very good results, I use lapua brass for both and have to turn the necks.
The 20br is a single shot and the 20-250 is built on a Stiller Predator action and feeds perfect with HS precision detachable magazine so it gets used more for coyotes

It ain't gonna make a difference if the barrel is cut or button, a good barrel is a good barrel. 9tw will work fine with 55's,
My barrel is a 3G 9 button and its a laser, only time i would go faster if the barrel was short and smaller case.

Regardless of the chambering it seems the overwhelming consensus is that the 55’s almost always want to run at 3700-3750 FPS. It doesn’t take a 22-250 case to hit that velocity. But for a yote/target gun I’d guess a 20-250 would feed slick.

Anyone know expected barrel life for 20 dasher. And velocity for 50 and 55gr
Short ish depending on powder burn type

The search function works great for finding loads in the 20BR & 20-250, 20Dasher… a little homework, you’ll be set…

Your asking all the right questions, btw…

Tommie pretty much spelled it out in his post. Fastest isn't always the most accurate.
RL15 is your friend in the 20BR case others will work but!

I bought a couple of Bartlein 1-9tw 20 cal bbls a few years ago, wound up chambering both in 20 Tactical. One is on a Howa Mini, finished it at 24"; the other is on a M700, it's 25". With H4895, I see 3154fps out of the 24" bbl, and 3200 out of the 25". From case & primer appearance, I'd say these are top practical velocities with 4895 in the 20 Tac. I'm at 2550', and get pretty decent accuracy. Have yet to try the 55s on a coyote, so no experience with expansion at any distance yet. We seem to be experiencing a drop in coyote population over the past 6 months for some reason? I still hear them yipping & howling when we have good moonlight, but am not seeing any dogs during daylight hours, unlike we usually do...
