THE FLYER ?

Is it a flyer? what is a flyer? Is a flyer out of the group cause you missed a wind change? Because you have 2 kernels more powder in that cartridge than the others? Cause you had sand shift in the bag? Because the hottie that works at Bartlein walked by when the best rilfer in the shop was doing your barrel? Brass was thinner in that case? Primer had more compound in it than the rest? Or is a flyer some glitch we don't even know about? Or is a flyer some gremlin that only shows up when I have a screamer group going? This is a BS question cause until you know what causes a flyer and how to identify it and correct it A FLYER IS JUST AN EXCUSE. You missed the group! A guy once told me that when you have the perfect rifle how will you know if the center of gravity is in the same spot in all your bullets?

Watching Erik Cortina talk about his 1.3 MOA 5-shot group @ 1000 yds. as he discussed his first 4 shots were @ .4 MOA and the fifth opened the group up to the 1.3 MOA. His question to Speedy was simply "Was shot number 5 a flyer ? Between the two they summarized and said yes. The question that remains for me is How far out of a given group at a given distance would a shot have to be in order to be labeled a flyer ? For instance, if a rifle is capable of shooting 1/4 MOA 5-shot groups @ 100 yds. how far out of the group would a shot need to land to be called a flyer ? Opinions please.
Is that number a total group size of 1.3MOA. The 10 ring in F Class is 1.0 MOA and I’m sure many guys have fired five 10’s in a row, which would be a sub 1.0MOA group. Now a 0.4MOA is really nice group at 1000 yards.

To be honest I believe you have to be the shooter to be able to make that judgment.

To me there are two types of flyers, shooter induced and load/rifle, shooting platform induced.

Just my opinion here but I believe the shooter is responsible for the majority of "flyers". I have been making, fixing, and building things my entire life so I find it easy to make 100 rounds close enough to exact so it really does not matter. Maintaining the exact same hold/technique and watching that invisible wind is a lot tougher.

If you have got 4shots in a tight group at 100yds and the fifth one goes out and the rifle-scope is good the ammo is good..the whole set up is good.there is a fair chance it's the shooter's fault..missed a condition change, touched the trigger differently, let the rifle recoil differently-touch the shoulder.the list goes on...take your pick.

Covered pretty well in this Bulletin

You missed the MOA bit which tells a quite different story.
Even the 0.3 MOA for 4 shots is good but not record breaking as seen that here from a chap that developed a custom 7mm Practical.
The first 4 measured.300”. At 1,000yds that is .030 MOA

The 5 shot group measured 1.300”. At 1,000yds that is .130 MOA

Still bigger than Mike Wilson’s record.

I agree that Ericks mistake was talking to the camera when He should have kept the rhythm going.
