NEW 800 yd range in Louisiana

I made the match yesterday too. It seems like it will be a nice range for any discipline shooter. The owner has big plans to have multiple rifle and pistol ranges there. Yesterday was very tricky conditions and I’m sure he will add additional flags along the right side so that you will be able to better read wind conditions. Left side of the range is up against the tree line blocking the wind and left side flags were blowing opposite of the mirage. They will be having monthly f class matches as well as Fpr and service rifle. I’m a member of Palo Alto range as well as coast rifle and pistol range and both are nice places to shoot but anyone living on the north shore it’s a short drive to the range. Membership is more than most ranges but you will have you to shot marker targets and they will have it set up for you when you get there for your day of shooting. Just call in advance.

What rifle/caliber/bullet are you asking about?
Some ranges have minimum requirements.
Have you shot 600 before?
Will your round be above the speed of sound @ 600yds?
Do you have velocity data for your load?
Some ranges require you to make a test shot or two if you aren't sure of your dope.

I would like to shoot a 600 yard 223 match sometime. I would have to travel a few hours to do so, when I have read the "rules" for matches within driving they asked for a "confirmed zero". I assumed this meant 600 yard zero, my range I can only shoot 300 yards max. 223, mid weight bullet, have not shot TARGETS pass 300 yards, have velocities and dope for 500 yards(prairie dog data).

I bet you could talk to Jake at this new range and see if you could fire a couple rounds at steel before a 600yd match. The biggest concern would be going over a low berm, or hitting the target frame/sensor.
Most ranges do want you to have at least a little 'track record' before shooting 600 or more.

With GOOD DOPE, muzzle velocity, 100yd zero, 300 yard drop, and a calculator should get you to 600.
For example, a .223 with 20-24" barrel, shooting 77 gr HPBT you should have no problem staying supersonic well past 600yd.
Muzzle velocity about 2800fps
100 zero
300yd drop 4 MOA
600yd drop 15 MOA and still going fast enough to trigger the shot marker.

The reason for the caution is there are so many 'berm shooters' you wouldn't want to be around.
Give a call to the range you are closest too and talk it over.

So, took Sunday off, played couch potato after Saturday's match.
Did run brass through the tumbler.
Tough getting old.
Today I start with brass prep.
Looks like the wife will need to get more involved in our reloading now that we have a new range.

Yote Harvester.
The fear for the owner is the damage to his expensive Electronic target system i suspect. Having a person who has never shot past 300 yards and possibly the wrong equipment could end up costing him thousands of dollars for one 50 cent bullet. Not trying to discourage you, but being informed helps everyone in the process. If my Coyote rifle is a 223 AR 15 with a 16" barrel and I am shooting say 55 grain bullets or even the 60gr at say a normal 2800fps and a good 100 yard zero. That bullet is going to drop in the neighborhood of 80+" going to 600 yards, or even MORE. Over seven feet, so are you going to try and HOLD over seven to nine feet over the target? Or do you have a scope that has target knobs where you can dial in 14 to 16 Minutes of elevation and hold right on the middle of the target? Does the scope track up and down when you click it...? Will it hold a group at 600 yards. My criteria for a new shooter is it has to hold the black at what ever distance in order to keep shooting. That is a 36" Bullseye at 600. If a guy cant keep his shots in the black, the risk of damage to his electronic targets is pretty high.
With the right equipment... its no problem at all. 223 shooting 77gr Black Hills out of 20" Upper and a scope that has enough elevation adjustment in it will go there all day long. A red dot and 55gr PPU ammo and a 3X magnifier... Not so much.
again not trying to discourage you by any stretch.

Made a trip out to Saorsa Acres this morning.
Forgot to bring our homemade bipods (previous pic). Had one folding leg bipod and Jake loaned me another. He also set up his LabRadar for us to collect data.
Zoom Zoom, 88's @ 3000fps :)
He had already set up a target stand @ 300yds (called a couple days ago) when we arrived.

We wanted to fine tune a load for the wife's 22Nosgar and my 22Nosler with SB6.5 and 88ELD and 85.5 Bergers. Felt we were close but wanted to compare the two bullets.
I had hoped my super zoom camera would be able to see holes in splatter targets but the mirage just swamped out the images, especially as it got close to noon.

We ended up making a FEW trips down range to check targets.

Using the LabRadar instead of my MagnetoSpeed was nice. Thanks Jake :)
Camera was able to pick up hits on the 300yd steel.

Here's a panorama of all the other shooters at the range today :)

Next trip will be earlier in the AM before the mirage kicks up.

Decided to spend some $$.
Bought a range camera. Should be here tomorrow.
Put together a home brew one a few years ago but it was tangle of cables and wires.
Sort of worked @ 450yd.

Tumbled brass Sunday, processed Monday, Charged and seated mine today, wife's tomorrow.
Will pick a day to go back to 300 and finish up loads.

Check the Saorsa Acres website for October match schedule.
Wife and I will be there Oct 15.

I plan a final sight in trip next week.

Went out to the range this morning.
Jake had set up a target stand @ 300 per request and a shot marker at 600.
Used his LabRadar again today. Took my new Bullseye camera and set it up in front of the 300yd target. Got a good signal without the receiver/modem. Worked like a charm. Could easily see .224 holes in a splatter target 12x18 turned sideways and it would show flashing shots. Shot a couple loads and picked what seemed to be the best for both ARs. Walked the camera out to 600yds, lined up the camera and walked back.
Walked again at the end of the session.
Got my exercise for today, phone says 5976 steps :)
I could see holes in the black paper target but the Bullseye software would not detect the shots on black.
600yds required the receiver to be on.

Now that I'm home it seems none of the pictures recorded to my phone. Guess I didn't "save" the session :(.
Learning curve.
Next time it's a splatter target @ 600 for the camera.
The shotmarker session is stuck on Jake's tablet. Changing back and forth on the phone from the shotmarker to the bullseye was too complicated. Didn't save any screen shots. At least we have good turrent settings for 600 with almost no wind or mirage.
See some of you on the 15th.
Also got to play with 6 of his Doberman puppies :)

At least you now have confirmed your load data at 600.
That’s always a good feeling going to a Match with good history.
Good luck on the 15th and keep em centered.
John

Yes. We went into 300 with a weak 100 yard zero. Dialed in, then on to 600. Not going to mess with the zero until after the next match. Now to duplicate the load. Wife picked the load a couple tenths above what I expected. Mine was the same I had been loading. She'll be sending 85.5s a little above 3000fps, me a little under. Our scores have been lagging after taking about 2 years off for family stuff. Not gonna win or even come close on the 15th. Just doing better than last time will be satisfying.

All ammo for the wife and I is finished and chamber checked.
Maybe I can get her to do some dry fire time before Saturday.
Other than that it's wait,
and wait,
and - --- :)

Wife and I made the 600yd match on Oct 15.
I came in dead last with a 564 :(
But we did have a good time. Went back for some trigger time yesterday and spent all day out there with some target shooting and some bull shooting :)
Did some more load testing at 100/300 but mostly for some trigger time.
Wife and I did a little dual on some 3 inch dots on typing paper @ 300 using my new Bullseye camera.
One shot, show shot, other shooter shoot. Left the camera on too long and again, forgot to save session.
This time we shot all the rounds we had. Tired of going home with a few left overs.
One other person showed up to practice. Not having a whole line of berm shooters is nice.

How about some cherry picked groups?
We started out to get a really good 100yd zero before moving out to 300.
Had what we thought was good dope for the 600 match but was from a rough 100 yd zero.
Maybe another trip or two @ 300 and 600 before the next match.
Anyway, here's my 100 yd sight in, 10 shots (no dimes).Fine-Tune-100yd-Zero.jpg
