Last weekend I was traveling the PA Turpike when I pulled into the rest stop with my 2022 F-350 Diesel towing a 10K GVWR horse trailer. I parked in a slot between the tractor trailers and headed for the facility. I passed the EV charging station where there were several Teslas plugged in. HA! I thought, how much time does charging extend their trip? They must feel better about saving the climate while they waste their time.

On my return trip, I towed a 16k GVWR horse trailer with a 10k curb weight that my F-350 zipped through the mountains while I had all the power that I needed to avoid being run over by the big rigs in the traffic. I hope that I don't live long enough to see them make light trucks an EV requirement. I didn't have horses onboard but would not want to have to subject them to summer heat while I had to charge my truck.

The Biden administration aims to slash the sale of all gas-powered vehicles to 50% of all new purchases by 2030. That's only 7 yrs 3 mos from now by my reckoning. Of course it ain't going to happen.

For one thing, there's no possibility to produce enough lithium according to Keith Phillips, CEO of Piedmont Lithium, yesterday. "We don’t have enough in the world" he said. Growing demand has caused the price of lithium carbonate to nearly double this year alone, and the IEA projects demand to grow by 40 times in the next two decades, with a majority of that supply coming from outside of the U.S.. With the demand for EVs far outpacing supply and new mining operations working within a five- to 10-year timeline before coming online, the U.S. cannot possibly meet its clean energy targets with the domestic sourcing priority.

News Update...

On Labor Day, the busiest weekend for travel, the latest data indicates that:

95% of electric vehicles are still on the road.

The other 5% made it home...but they couldn't be recharged because the power grid couldn't handle them and your AC running at the same time.

After California emerges from this grid crisis, I wonder if EV sales in "the world's 5th largest economy" will be quite so brisk.

Comment on another forum. Answer to his question: No.

"Drove from the Bay Area to LA County today — 353 miles — and saw numerous Teslas on I-5. Wonder if any of them could make it on one charge considering the 100F to 113F temps on I-5, as well as having to climb from the San Joaquin Valley up and over the Grapevine and Tejon Summit in that heat (~400’ to 4144’)."

Another good one:

"In 2020, the local power company turned off all the power to our community for eight consecutive days. My home is wired for and has a large generator. Not everyone was so lucky. Oregon forced the installation of smart meters on all homes a while back. Oregon recently closed it's only coal-fired plant, closed it's only nuke plant years ago and is working to shut down hydro electric dams throughout the state. What could go wrong? I live in a relatively sane part of Oregon but that doesn't help much when the crazy half controls the government!"

William F. Buckley once quipped "A liberal is someone who is determined to reach into your shower and adjust the water temperature for you." Everyone thought he was making a joke.

Who here lives in Colorado or gets power from Xcel Energy?

Thousands of Xcel Energy customers locked out of their thermostats during “energy emergency”
Denver News reports that Xcel Energy locked out 22,000 customers in Colorado from adjusting their thermostats as temperatures rose into the 90s. ... When thousands of Xcel customers in Colorado tried adjusting their thermostats Tuesday, they learned they had no control over the temperatures in their own homes.

Their "smart" thermostats had been "locked" by Xcel Energy due to a "power emergency".

Only 3 wasnt smart enough to google how to install a jumper wire

Don’t have one but decided to buy the VW iD4 AWD SUV. It is under $50K, gets 250 miles on a full charge, AWD, tow package, and has net+ reviews. I am older, and will probably make this my last vehicle. But I live in a “charge station rich environment” in the PNW, not Eastern Montana.

98% of my driving is under 100 miles per round trip. And I saw one at Mount Baker Easton Glacier trailhead a week ago. That’s as rough a road as I would drive.

Edited to add: It’s my money, I earned it running my own business, and I can damn well spend it how I want. :-). There are no perfect choices. This is my best option.
