Hoarding reloading supplies?

Completely guilty of the above description and not ashamed. I don’t have a crystal ball but I am old enough to see a storm coming off in the distance and prepare to take shelter before getting rained upon. I built my stash starting with a College course in shortages by William Jefferson Clinton upped the ante when things got back to somewhat normal pricing and availability wise under Barack Hussein Obama and really filled the barn under Donald J Trump. I saw the storm coming. I bought easily 95% of my stuff when it was just as easy for me to buy it as anybody else with some extra coin in pocket and a lot of times with free shipping and/or on sale. I do feel for the younger men and women that have not been through this circus before. Chances are availability will get better, it already has somewhat but as far as prices go I really doubt much if any lower prices.

People who run out of components and can't find what they need/want are constantly mocked on the internet for not being prepared. They are told that this is at least the 3rd shortage of components and that they obviously didn't learn a lesson.

Do I think people are buying more components than they ever did before - yup.

I know people that hoard. Not so they can be properly supplied either. They hoard because of the same reason people die with enough toy trains to supply the children of a small country a nice Christmas. It gives people a feeling of power to have more stuff than they could ever use.

I know guys that have enough powder and bullets to burn up a 100 barrels (which they will never shoot) and they continue buying more, "just in case".

Hoarding is an American pastime, and maybe even more correctly, a national sickness. If you have ever seen a house of a hoarder you will get my point. Which has become very common.

Don't forget the toilet paper.

I'm fine with using dictionary.com's definition too:

hoarding:
hoardings, things that are hoarded.

hoard:
noun
a supply or accumulation that is hidden or carefully guarded for preservation, future use, etc.:a vast hoard of silver.

Either way, IMO, it's a valid use of the word.

A friend of mine is a new/young plumber. The stories he's told me are pretty amazing. And, he wasn't in a position to turn down the work.

People are hoarding. And not because they need the stuff, they are doing it because they think it is fun, and it makes them feel good. I think it is like a security blanket. Not everyone is like this, but many...

If it were toys trains they would call it a "collection".

I am two things: Old and a Shooter.
This Inflation is putting a damper on many things ,Sports Shooting for one and Vacations for sure.
I am checking the prices on reloading supplies? They go up by the week and No Stock, No Back Order?

I got very Lucky this past week I scored 400 Berger's. That works out to two and a half long range matches.
I would love those Good Old Days to Return!! Walk In to Western Tire, 22 Long Rifle Winchester Yellow Box $.50 each.
Dreams are still Free.

Hoard is an often misused word I think. It often has a negative view. Here and other forums I read all the time about people that bought up tens of thousands of primers and are still using primers from 1980’s. We all read thier stories of them buying components cheaply and wish we All would have done the same. So are we all hoarders? Yes I guess so in a way. But to state it better we are preppers. We eventually will use what we are collecting. A better word would be Stockpile.

A true hoarder has a sickness, MENTAL ILLNESS. It is a sight to be seen in order to really understand.
As a firefighter for over 20 years and also doing heating and cooling for 27 years believe me it is frightening. When in their homes you are afraid to move anything for fear of something jumping out and biting you. Actual garbage piled floor to ceiling with a small path from room to room. Scary.

Fortunately I'm one of the few that purchased things over many years. Primers here, powder there, whatever. I shoot for fun and haven't thought about trying my hand at shooting any kind of formal match but lately it has me thinking about it. I am running a bit low on Berger bullets but have plenty of other brands that will suffice at my level of shooting prowess. Unless things really turn around with Berger they are very low on my list. I jokingly told a friend the other day that I may put a moratorium on my range. No more Berger products after a certain date. You get caught with Bergers you will be banned. :D

I have enough components to last at least through 2025. Am I a hoarder? I have ten year old primers and I have 2 year old primers. Buying a brick of primers or a jug of powder every other year whether I use them or not doesn't make me a hoarder. At least I don't think so.

A hoarder is a guy that has enough components to last 3 lifetimes. And trust me, they are out there.

Not an issue in this area because there is nothing available to hoard, at least the last time I checked.

I don't know what label you want to place of accumulating supplies, but it just makes sense to keep an inventory of the components you use so you can remain active in the hobby. I don't consider that hoarding, just advanced planning. Since the components will eventually get consumed, there is no waste involved.

The problem becomes when it difficult for persons on fixed and limited income to lay out a lot of cash for a non-essential commodity. The last time I checked at a local shop, small rifle primers were priced at $99 a brick of 1,000. They didn't have them anyway but that's a fair amount a money for a lot of us, but I would have "bit the bullet" and paid it since I need primers. I would have just purchased a cheaper bottle of bourbon next visit to the booze store to budget the cost of primer. ;) It's probably worse now, I don't know.

I did pay $50 for a brick of CCI 22 LR standard velocity cartridges but I could justify that on the basis that's 500 rounds. At 20 rounds of slow fire per range session with my revolver, that's 25 range sessions, that's fairly good value by today's standards.

As a plumber, I think I could deal with boxes, unless those boxes hid dead rodents and stuff. Trash hoarding ... I wouldn't set foot in there.

I had a call once and refused to go in, no heat call. When the homeowner hired someone to clean it up it took 2 plus 15-yard dumpsters and that was just the garage and basement.
Turned out to be a large hole in the boiler.

If hindsight was 20/20 I would have invested/built storage units. Those things are still popping up and they fill as soon as they open. I'm proud to say I can still park my vehicles in the garage, many that live around me don't. We had softball size hail in the area last night, I'm sure insurance adjusters will be busy today.

My wife told me once, if you have to rent a storage unit, you've got too much shit. (yes I had one at the time) Couple garage sales later, I was not paying 50 bucks a month to store a bunch of crap that I didn't really need to start with.

The issue of is it hoarding or being prepared for things becoming hard to get is kinda like..."is it a tomato or a toe-mat-o"?

Its funny that a lot of those accusing others of hoarding are out of most components or have little cushion.

I suppose that it would be odd for a starving man to ask from a man that has more food than he could ever eat?

I am not sure that is odd.

I remember when I was a young married man I wanted to go the US Nationals in Muncie to fly my model airplane in the competition there. I didn't have any money. We were totally in debt from school. I wanted an engine so I could compete (these are special engines and could not be simply bought at the hobby shop, they were old and outdated). I was told a local guy had some and I contacted him. He told me, and I will never forget what he said...

He said "Sure I have those engines, I have drawer full of them, new in the box, and in that drawer they are going to stay..."

He said "They are mine, I might need them someday"...

I am quite sure that guy died pretty shortly after, and he had his drawer full of engines... maybe they put it in the box with him when he put him in the ground. I did not go to Muncie for a very long time.

I have known some hoarders... Model airplane guys, and guitar guys... It is no wonder you can't buy a decent Les Paul, or an old Marshall, there is one Japanese billionaire that has entire warehouses full of stuff. 10s of thousands of items, all locked away... because he can. Yah, hoarding is a real thing.

For those that haven't bought much in years you probably don't shoot much. Times have changed and constantly change and so has the dictionary, I would have to think.
I very well may be a hoarder of reloading components seeing how by the end of this month from June 1st of last year I will have shot 2500+ centerfire rounds + mucho rimfire. And in that 12 months I shot 1 comp which was under 70 rounds. My goal every year is 2000 - 3000 c.f, rounds a year.
I normally try to shoot 1/2dz f class shoots a year but took this past year off. Maybe I can be labeled a Horder or a purchaser of shooting commodities that I try to use up.
Try to plan ahead.

For most of my reloading life I only bought what I needed as I needed it. Components were easy to find and I never bought more than I would use in the immediate future. If I was running low, I'd just grab another box of bullets or another pound of powder. Today, I'll grab 300-500 bullets at a time and have bought 4-8lbs of powder at a time.

Am I a hoarder? :oops::)
