Hoarding reloading supplies?

For most of my reloading life I only bought what I needed as I needed it. Components were easy to find and I never bought more than I would use in the immediate future. If I was running low, I'd just grab another box of bullets or another pound of powder. Today, I'll grab 300-500 bullets at a time and have bought 4-8lbs of powder at a time.

Am I a hoarder? :oops::)
I would say the 1st sentence of your post still pertains to you. But don't forget primers. Lol.

Being a non-competitive shooter but experiencing the past shortages caused me to take note of what "might" happen back in 2020. I just decided to buy a little bit of stuff along and now I'm glad I did. I don't have a mountain of supplies but I think I have enough to last thru a reasonable amount of time. "whatever that is" I guess we will just find out in the future and I don't feel like I'm a hoarder. Anybody got any H-4350 or CCI BR-2 primers for sale?

I keep my shooting supplies well stocked since I run 6to9k rounds into pdogs yearly, not including several thousand for range, coyote, plinking fun.
I try to keep a 5 year supply line.
I buy when I see items I will be using.
Well stocked and using it is not close to hoarding supplies and not using it.

Not so much, maybe more so a "small timer". :D At the point you commence buying your bullets 2-4,000 at a time, or more, your powder 3-4 cases at a time, and your primers likewise (lot #'s mean a lot to some folks); then, they might label you a hoarder (forgetting that you might just be a savvy competitor)! And the less likely to be caught with your britches down.

Not me... every and I mean everytime I have a new barrel planned I buy enough powder that I need to burn it out, all at one time. I don't care if people think or call it hoarding, I call it smart.

Here's an example. I know I'm ordering another 6br barrel in June. I have primers and bullets. I need brass which I'm going to use 300 pieces of Peterson. I know I need 16lbs. of powder which I will get soon, I already know where to purchase within driving distance to me. Hoarding no, smart yes.
Spot on!…. Ditto here too!…

Love it! I've been running 8-10K rounds a year but have just a 3 year supply => looks like I need to up my game.

I predict Shooting Supply's will start to be available, in large quantity's soon. The economy is tanking and therefore there will be a lot less 'free' money available. Many folks will be making decisions about Gas, Groceries, and paying bills and even though they are passionate about shooting, at the end of the day choices will be made. One more prediction; Many of the folks we have been buying our supply's from will cease to exist due to the lessoning of demand. I have, and always will, support those companies that have treated me well. Maybe keep in mind those companies that charged us an excessive amount in the last few years in our future purchases.

Another hoarding thread.... I was caught next to nothing when the first shortage came along. It wasn’t a very good feeling. Promised myself when the supply lines filled back up and pricing was decent I’d change that, which I did. Components were cheap in 2018 & 2019 so I added more. Is that hoarding or learning a lesson from when I wasn’t very prepared at all.

During this shortage I’ve helped a lot of fellow shooters, friends and family. I’m happy to do that and I always encourage them to get at least some kind of a stash or supply going. Pretty sad when you can’t use your favorite rifle because you didn’t think about the “what if”.

When this settles down and it will the lesson is obvious.

Lets not get too dramatic here. we are talking about reloading supplies, not food for the hungry, medical supplies, etc. And like others have said, when they become available and affordable, I will restock

Ah, no pdogs. Just holes in paper.

I compete in 'over the course'. The - ahem, excessive - number of rounds is simply because

1. I'm learning about positions through trial and error
2. I have to relearn most things at least three times.
3. I suck at it.
I was shooting across the course we were averaging about 300 rounds a week because I sucked really bad

First I don't see it as being HOARDED/ING......I ACQUIRED what I have over 54 years of loading. I bought supplies when I could in amounts that at the time I could afford. eg....I bought a 100 lb keg of IMR 4895 from Herters (late 60's-early 70) and just finished it up a couple years back. I've picked up powder, primers, bullets, brass along the way and still have some of the old stuff on the shelfs. I still use it and can't really say why I just don't use the oldest first.....It just happens that way.

"Hoarding" seems to be a term that gets tossed about during reloading component shortages, mostly by those that are either unable or unwilling to to put forth the effort and/or money required to obtain what they want. Its use is often very much akin to Aesop's story, "The Fox and the Grapes".

The bottom line, reloading components are available to any that are willing to put in due diligence in order to find the necessary supplies, and pay the cost of the item(s). In the last 10 months or so, I have managed to find H4895, Varget, and small rifle primers, both online and at local vendors. This required only a modest effort on my part in terms of my own daily searches at various online vendors, the use of resources such as the "Reloading Components" thread here at A.S., or a bit of networking between fellow shooters in the case of the local vendors. The good news is that if you really want something bad enough, you can likely find it with a little effort. The bad news is that it probably won't come cheap.

Back when I shot the 14 in matches. I bought 64 pounds at a time 10K primers for the competition 14s. People asked how many rounds would it take to burn up a 14 barrel. My answer - 32 pounds. I dedicate 32 pounds and 5K primers for every new barrel. I never worry about detailed round count. Shooting in matches is easy to keep track of round counts, in training it is easy to lose count. When the primers are gone, time to grab gun #2 to be primary, #1. Send the other for rebarreling. #3 now becomes the back up.

Yes, I was hoarding, typical year was close to 2 barrel consumption.

I didn't imply it wasn't but having several years supply of shooting material is simply wise if its a hobby you love to do. When component availability came back after O'Bummer was elected prudent folks stocked up.
I just bought 5K small rifle primers from an acquaintance here. A friend picked them up and drove them home for me. I gave him 1K for his help and sold 2K for what I paid. I'm not the least bit embarrassed because I have planned well, no one should be imo.

I would agree that a drawer full of model airplane engines is perhaps excessive but who knows what his accident rate was and how often he needed to replace engines. It strikes me that you judgement is a bit myopic? No offense meant.

Consumption isn't hoarding if you got hungry mouths to feed

I've been "hoarding" since I saw the writing on the wall.........that was the Clinton years for me. I don't consider it hoarding as much as preparing.....been consolidating lately to only powders I will use once "it" takes place....and if I have to explain what I'm preparing for.........you're WAY too blind and trusting for me to do you any good. I have more than I can ever use, but I may have enough to supply my family and friends.

This isn't for scalping, blasting, target shooting, or anything of that nature. I've got enough of that type to last me and my immediate family for awhile. My hobby stuff is topped off full.

IF prices drop AND it doesn't hit the fan soon, I will be "hoarding" even more.....a lot more...........if you choose not to, that's on you pal. I'm taking care of me and mine.
