Accurate 22 Rifle

I asked a similar question and the information gathered was helpful, but what I couldn't find an answer to is this: what can I live with and what can I not live without (in a rifle I mean). Each rifle suggested has it's own idiosyncrasies and only I can decide whether they bother me or don't. Each has, or does not have, aftermarket upgrades available. For instance, I have a Tikka centerfire that l love, so naturally the T1x was my first choice, and one attractive aftermarket option is the KRG Bravo stock. But after searching and searching for one and seeing the inflated prices when I actually could find one and knowing that I had to find a miracle to own one - I got disgusted with a Tikka quest and moved on. Maybe one day they will be more available and I will re-visit them.

I now have an Anschutz and a CZ and each has properties I love and properties I hate, but both are fun to shoot and do quite well.

A half way decent rifle should shoot 1/2 inch or less at 50 yd. There are plenty of good choices. For around $500, any CZ 457 or Tikka T1x is a good pick. You could look for a used Anshutz 64 action rifle on Gunbroker or on this forum for around $900. Then the price increases. There are some real nice older Ansuchutz 54 action target rifles on GB. Some are kinda beat up stock wise, but I've seen them for around $700-1000. Refinish the stock and you will have a terrific shooter.

I use a Sako Finnfire P94s for sporter class BR and an Anshutz Match 54 for heavier class. Both shoot very well when matched to the correct ammo. (Eley tenex for the Sako and Lapua Midas+ for the M54.)

Top 22 bolt action rifle choices are Vudoo, Anschutz, Bergara 14r, CZ, Tikka T1x. They are all excellent shooters and one will beat the other in the right hands. You can buy just so much accuracy with money, the rest is up to you. I've owned most of these and on certain days I can shoot one rifle better, but the next, my performance is dismal. Pick one, then practice and develop your technique.

Match .22’s don’t seem to wear out. I’ve really enjoyed old .22’s that were pretty clearly permanent collection pieces until they outlived the owners, and they ended up at reputable stores. The 52’s and 40-X’s I bought that way haven’t lost accuracy. Yes, those could be hard to locate, and admittedly it’s probably easier to happen across a good one than try to find one when searching.

Kimber has more recently made quality .22’s in a variety of repeater and single shot configurations and they always have respected accuracy principles.

I picked up one of the Bergara B14s a couple weeks ago and I’m pleased with it.
I must have got the pick of the litter because mine is shooting very well with Lapua Polar, Midas and black Eley. It was better than I expected from a factory rifle.
I’m going to put a better trigger in it sometime soon.

Oddly enough ,my Savage Mark II does not like the $$$ ammo, but shine with mid priced $8 a box stuff. Today @ 50 yards my 20 round average for CCI Std + was .577, SK Std + .599, and SK Pistol was .432. Eley Match and RWS R100 were so pathetic I did not bother to measure but a guestimate would be about an inch

“Permanent Collection Pieces” spot on

I once found an old Remington 513T in a pawn shop. The guy wanted $100. I bought it. Whoever had owned it was serious about accuracy. It had the competition iron sights, a 26” bull barrel, and the prettiest after market stock I had ever seen. The trigger was super light. I figured it would be the greatest squirrel rifle ever. Well, it sort of was, but was also the heaviest squirrel rifle ever, so it became a range shooter. It was so accurate that it was boring. I’d shoot up the center of the target and then shoot the staples holding the target to the backer, and drop the target. Boring. I sold it. Then got an assortment of lever action 22’s that I hunted and plinked with - 9422, 39A, Browning lever gun. Used them for decades, but a couple of years ago I heard about the T1X,, and I was able to order one. This is one really good 22. I don’t know if it’s good enough for any sort of competition, but it easily outshoots the legendarily accurate lever guns I have, which are now all safe queens. It has a 1MOA guarantee at 50 yards, and easily does that with pretty much all my ammo choices but Thunderbolts. It might be, though I’ll never know, as accurate as that old 513T. What I do know, is that it isn’t for sale.

.5 at 50 yds with decent ammo as others have said is not a challange. My Savage FVSR MKII in a Boyds stock shoots it's preferred ammo in the .4" with a 12X scope and not many rounds down the barrel. It's a good time to buy an accurate .22! CZ, TX1, B14 all fit many budgets and probably shoot half the group size that your looking for.

I own or have owned 4 magazine feed 22LR rifles that can/could put 5 shots or even 10 into 0.5" at 50 yards with the ammunition they liked best. A bone stock Ruger 1022 with a replacement 0.920" Green Mountain target barrel and Eley Action just made the grade at 50 yards. I hated the trigger and eventually sold it and bought a Ruger American Rimfire. With the trigger adjusted as low as it will go and a Weaver 6X20 Grand Slam Target Scope it can meet your goal easily with Norma Target 22's, and even tighter with SK Rifle Match. A Christenson Arms Ranger and Muller 8X32 target scope shoots well inside 0.5" at 50 yards with either SK Rifle Match or Lapua Center X. Finally a CZ457 Varmint with a Muller 40X target scope and Yo-Dave trigger spring easily meets your criteria with Lapua Midas+ or RWS R-50. That rifle will shoot any target grade or practice grade ammunition inside 0.5" but likes those two the best. As others have said just about any decent rifle , a good scope, and the amo it likes are capable of that level of accuracy if you do your part.

I have been shooting for 40 years but never a 22. Which rifle should I be considering to shoot 1" at 50 yds? It should have a magazine of at least 5.
Find a Remington 541-S. If you can find one-not cheap but amazing accuracy.

Tikka t1x is the best budget 22lr going. Smooth action nice factory trigger. Plenty of aftermarket to pimp it out if needed. I handled the bergara bmr and the t1x side by side. As far as the action goes the tikka wins hands down. Ofcourse that's just my opinion. No budget just jump to a voduu and save yourself the trouble.

I don't think kimber has made a rimfire in well over a decade. I own 2 and sure wish they still made them. One of my favorites. They seem to bring premium when offered for sale.

For a light, wood stocked, field hunting/plinking rifle (bolt action w/5-shot detachable clip), I'd look around for a used Anschutz Model 141. Very accurate and reasonably priced for a very quality firearm.
