suggestions on new 22 lr rifle

I'd be looking at the CZ. I have a very good friend who is a Master Gunsmith, he's been getting some Kimbers in with major problems, beautiful rifles, but there seems to be some problems with their newer RF and CR rifles.

I'd stay away from Ruger, if it has to go back, they will remove anything extra you have done, put stock parts including the trigger back in and keep your custom parts, plus their barrels are not that great.

Anshutz, great rifles, the 54 model if you can afford it, the 64's are not bad either.

A good used Winchester Model 52 will be a great shooter, just have the barrel scoped by a good gunsmith before buying it, you want to be sure there are no barrel or headspace problems, get a good one and they are fantastic.

For a light weight rifle, also look at the Marlin 39A, an old one, 22 lever action and a Mossberg model 42, they are light and shoulder as if they were a part of you, plenty accurate for hunting, not tac drives, but I love mine.

My best, John K

+1 on the Anschutz 64 MPR. With Wolf Match Extra ammo it will shoot bug holes at 50 meters. Awesome rifle.

Save some extra and get one with the 54 action, much better than the 64 action, if your going to spend the money, spend more and do it right. It's a one time shot, go for the gold.

If you want to save money and easily get benchrest level accuracy with almost any ammo purchased, get yourself a Thompson Center R55 Classic Benchmark rifle. There is a standard Classic model with a sporter barrel, but I have never shot one. Though I'd be willing to bet they are very accurate as well.

The short 20" heavy barrel of the Benchmark model gives good velocities and excellent center of gravity along with it's shorter stock profile for perfect balance when shooting off hand. These rifles shoot themselves. Hitting squirrels 10 out of 10 times at 100 yards+ is very easy with these rifles if you do your part. I would argue that it is the best "out of the box" 22 rifle available today. And quite a bit less money than some of the fancy tactical and custom models floating around out there. It's lightweight and has benchrest level accuracy. Can fire 10 shots very rapidly without throwing a single flier. The TC Benchmark is the PERFECT balance between the feel and accuracy of a heavy contour barrel and custom action , but with a comfortable weight of 6.8 lbs that will not leave you with a sore shoulder after all day field carrying.

And I personally think they are one of the best "looking" 22lr weapons out there which makes for good icing on the cake : )

Do you want a squirrel rifle or eye candy to brag about. There is absolutely no need to spend a 1000$ on a squirrel gun. I have spent a good amount of time in persuit of the wiley squirrel. Any decent 22 will do. Bolt action, lever, single shot, simi-auto, pump what ever. For not much you can get an old Winchester 69 have it drilled and tapped if you just have to have a scope, I realy prefer peeps because they can be sighted in with the bullets flight with in 3/4 inch of line of sight out to 35 yards which is squirrel shooting distance. Shot gun hunters do well on tree critters. If you want advice on a hunting gun talk to some body from the woods not a range rat. Oh by the way if you get a win 69 they have adjustable triggers. The model? is the same gun but with a tubelar
magazine. They are usaly happy with cheap ammo. Pardon my spellingh

I finally found a rifle and bought it. It is a cooper jackson squirrel in 17 mach 2. I think it will make a great squirrel rifle. I called leupold custom shop and they are making me a custom vx3 3.5 x 10 x 40 with adjustable objective and a cpc reticle. I received my cooper last week but it will be about 3 more weeks for my scope. It was a bit more than what I wanted to spend but boy those coopers shoot one whole groups especially in the mach 2's. Thanks for everybodys input. Cant wait til fall.

I don't know much about some of the other rifles but can speak for the Belgium Browning T-bolts as I have several. I have both T-1 and T-2 in left and right hand versions. I also have a custom T-bolt with full Mannlicher palm swell pistol grip stock and hard chrome finish. Beautiful little gun and fun to play with. AIR, most of the salt wood guns were 1966 to 1971 although some in that range did have non-salt cured wood. And if you have a medium to large size hand, you can keep your finger in the trigger guard and still cycle the bolt one handed!!
