Looking for Headspace tool made buy someone on here

I’m new to doing barrel work for myself and really think something like this would be handy. Has anyone tried the badger ordinance with the dial indicator for measuring protrusion or is this one the best to buy.

Thats the beauty of the 1” ball. Doesnt matter what cone angle you have nor if the cone is seated correctly and straight

I'm not a machinist, nor do I have the tools either, but wouldn't a steel ball work for headspace the same as on a cone breech, just need a deeper mic and appropriate size ball? Not to mention a good print for the reamer?

Exactly! Great way to measure actual headspace rather than go or no-go. There was a thread on this a few years ago wherein myself and another member derived the equation for this:

A lot of the work I do for industry has call outs using gage balls. I don't use them as a number is a number whether I use a ball or a gage. You end up pretty much in the same place. I know of one customer, not mine, that calls out ten different locations in a chamber using gage balls.
That is a good point with the mic having a solid stop you can feel
Because gages are undersize they lay in the bottom of the chamber. Out of square. One of the pluses of using a mic is it squares up the gage in the chamber when it makes contact. I get repeatable measurements to within a few tenths. Not that a chamber has to be or can be cut to those tolerances.

Can you provide some measurements for the body?
jkohler lists some dimensions for his with pictures.

Okay understand!
Can you provide some measurements for the body? I have a doner mike and could make one. Please! And how much travel on the mike.
The mic is a zero to 1” and its zeroed sitting on top of the ball on a surface plate, so make it all turn out that way so your headspace measurements actually are the right number on top of a gage in the chamber. The measurement of your body depends on how much your mic protrudes on zero and how it mounts up

Thx I understand!
