How do I fix this dimple?

LOL, no home propane torch will heat that up cherry red.
I would weld a threaded rod right into the hole then make a small bridge with a hole to the ends
and use heat and a nut to pull it out then cut the rod off.

Take it to a welding shop.
What if I use a threaded rod, locktite a nut on the inside, a washer on the outside then a nut and heat it and turn the outside nut on the washer? Maybe not cherry red but with Mapp gas?

I like your idea but Acetylene will make it quicker.

I have some of my better shooters at the match I run do that to my target hangers. I fix them with an oxy/acetylene torch and pry bars as riflewoman reported above. Does not have to be pretty, just functional for a 2x2 to fit in my hangers.

If you insist, Bud Light and some popcorn, where was I.....ah yes full time or 3/4, 50 hour work schedule, little sleep during summer semesters, 3 younguns, walking to university over 10 miles uphill both ways:rolleyes:...man this beer is going down smooth:p.

Up hill both ways??? LOL!

Drill a 1/2" hole in the back wall of the tube directly in line with the high spot of the dimple. Heat dimple cherry red, use flat nose punch through previously drilled hole. and 3 lb. hammer to flaten dimple while front side of tube is supported on a solid surface. Could be worked cold but may take more time and a bigger hammer. Let SIL do the repair so he will be motivated to shoot better.

I would use a bigger hammer on the wood stack and drive it Into the metal. Then when that didn't work get a bigger hammer and a hot wrench and beat some metal out. After that I would either build a new one or buy a new one.

how 'bout heat it up a little or a lot if it won't go, then get some metal tubing or angle iron that fits snug and pound in in while still hot - should only need 'bout a foot???. jb weld the hole if it bothers you

This is the way.

If this is just the base of the support where the wood stake goes in I would take an angle grinder and cut out the affected area until I can get the stake in fully to the bottom then paint it. Plenty of steel on the other three sides as well as above and below the dimple to hold the stake in place with no wiggles with the set screw from the other side. I would not get too worked up with welding a plate back over that - you will just shoot it again sometime..

You didn't sight it in for him?
Heat it, beat it and become a better shot. Easy peasy. :D

I am a better shot, 45 feet 1911 .45 and pistol was sighted in. Not great but not terrible.

He on the other hand, left hand left eye dominant trying to shoot right handed from a Weaver position .

But you know if USAF field grade officers have to start shooting handguns something has gone really bad:eek:!
