What do I Have and how do I fix it?

My buddy had one that used to bring live snakes into his shop just so she could play with them inside and also so she could let them go and see if she could find them later

I've got one that does the same thing with mice and alligator lizards. The good one leaves presents on the porch. Dead ones.

I remember Herter's using Zastava Yugoslav actions, not FN. Looks like someone has tried to install a FN Browning bolt release on a Zastava action. I also recognize the trigger as the one that Zastava uses. These bolt stops worked fine on the FN Brownings. Just may have not been installed properly on this action or perhaps it wasn't possible to do so. Take a good look at it and how it works and maybe you can figure out how to fix it. Replacing it with the original Mauser type bolt release/ejector would be an option if the ears that hold it to the receiver have not been cut off. I'd take it off and compare it with another Mauser receiver that has the ejector stripped off to find if there have been any modifications to the action.

Best I can tell from the pics the spring holds the the bolt stop lever in place and nothing else. I don't see where the lever actually pivots on anything. I see what looks like a pin running thru part of that lever assembly. Perhaps it was designed originally to run thru those original pivot screw ears and they have been removed by accident. Maybe.................

I think the spring is buggered up, any idea of where to get one?
I looked on the net a bit and have not found one yet.

A quick GOOGLE search shows me you are not the only one in need of these parts. That tells me there isn't a cache of these somewhere. Find yourself a real gunsmith, 'cause in this case the interdnet ain't gonna' help you!

I don't think he can go back to a standard ejector box, it looks like the the ears that the ejector box screw goes through have been milled off. I have seen some odd ball ejector/bolt release systems on Husqvarna Mauser's. The action may have been supplied through them to Herters.
That's factory believe it or not . Parts need to be made or rebuilt .
