Ya know...Im not gonna return the insult... that I'm as dumb as some barnyard animal.... simply cuz I like to know how things work. Forget The multiple times I explain I just can't go around trying every single theory on here and burning up my barrel. But Im gonna let it pass.

You have a good day, ok ?

Some interesting take-a-ways / changes for me to try :

1. Find a good seating depth first, before powder charge. I always did other way round.

2. Test powder starting at max charge. That way you find a max velocity asap. Not sure why I always worked from mid-level charge and worked up. Kinda dumb of me... guess I was looking for pressure.

3. Whidden hydraulic forming dies look really interesting... to save time, components, money, range trips, bbl life, etc ... or even DJs Brass Service.

Still not sure of the effectiveness of ladder / OCW methods. Gotta study them more. Testing at more than 100 yd will be problematic due to range access / knee injuries.

It wasn't meant as an insult, but I'll man up and apologize since you were offended. Thing is, I'd say the same to you in person. When a guy comes on here or any big forum for that matter and asks a question, he's obviously going to get advice that ranges from great to forget about it. He's also going to get advice from shooters of different disciplines who tend to do things differently to achieve a good tune and the corresponding result on their target paper. More than one way to skin a cat.

I'm an inquisitive guy too, but I try not to end up too far in the weeds. This doesn't have to be rocket surgery. Example, I really like music. I listen daily on my two channel setup. I can completely enjoy the music without knowing how my music streamer feeds info to my amp with the end result being sweet sound coming out of my speakers.

The absolute best advice I've seen in this thread is to find a willing person of some repute that has been around the block you are trying to navigate. That is the complete and total shortcut to get from point A to point B. You will come up to speed quickly, and from there you can tweak things to suit your own style. I'm still a hack, but I now occasionally have my day in the sun because I shoot all the time and have benefitted from the advice of some respected shooters who were willing to help me at the range. YMMV

I have eaten all the popcorn and barbecue chicken I can stand.
You have my phone number and you’re only about an hour from me, so get in touch with me and I will tell you what to load. Don’t seat any bullets just turn them upside down and bring your seater die.
Use your .266 button.
We can start about 10 am tomorrow at my range I think you’ll walk away with pretty good prospective.

Don’t forget to wear eye protection!

2. If not a misprint, Is possibly the dumbest and most dangerous thing I’ve ever read on this board, and I’m sugar coating it.

Bart
If you’re serious about getting better call me at Barts Custom Bullets 270-eight seven nine- 42 seven nine. You may have to leave a message but I’ll call you back.

Do you have any clue who is giving you recommendations? What their qualifications are? Pick someone that is at the top of whatever discipline you want to shoot and listen to them. Figure out a method. Great shooters are not scientists. They are shooters. I know a lot of engineer types that are really smart but can’t get past the “why” and shoot like crap.

Reading through this threat I’ve read some really good advice and some not so good.
Now how can you figure that out?
Please point out the bad advice. A few of us will listen and heed the warning. The rest are destined to travel the low road on Darwin’s pass.

1. No, start with combustion (charge) first then go to harmonics (depth) second. A good place to start is touching (+ or - 1-2 thou) the lands.
2. Wrong.
3. In the end you would be better off using Alpha Dasher or Lapua and DJ.

I think your best use of time would be to take Stan up on his offer.
If you don’t do this, follow his and Bart’s invaluable advice. There are also many others on this site that plain know what they are talking about and have proved it out consistently at the range. Be like Mike. ;)

I thought I was helping a fella out a while back and got my head torn off for my efforts so im reframing from any advice giving, I may mention how I do a certain phase but that's about the extent of it. Now I delete almost every post after a short period and I really don't regret it.
This can be a rough and tumble place, tho nowhere near as bad as SnippersHell.... which is chock full of trolls and 'tudes. One fella in particular.... and his posse....DON'T EVER disagree with him. He'll falsely accuse you then ban you.

Powder testing = flat spot / node / same velocity between two consecutive charges
Bullet seating = group size

@Dave M. is trying to help

There is a ton of good info here. Be willing to change, if you want change.
So true Wyoming. My scores have went up exponentially since I joined this site. There is fantastic info here and if you are open minded and willing to listen and learn, the results will be fantastic. I just started shooting free recoil about 6 months and it has completely changed my life. I went for being a consistent 191-194 shooter at 600 yards, to “cleaning” 6 of my last 8 targets, and finishing 3rd in our 600 yard state championship.
