Made an inboard spider from the cheap Grizzly plate mounted to a thick South Bend D1-4 backplate. This is a PM-1340GT. You can do just over 19" barrels.PM1340inboard spider.jpg
 
Yes on chinese for the GS, the PM's with T are Taiwan and I think all have 5 year warranty. PM-1340GT and PM-1440GT are Taiwan. I think the manual for the South Bend was done in USA.

Made in china im sure. Its not like a regular south bend its just got the name on it imported by grizzly. Lee gardner did a write up on his on here and i think he was selling it last i heard. I think they work fine
 
Its worth doing some reading there, between the the glowing reviews there are a fair number of folks who aren't as overwhelmed with the PM machines.

I chamber about that speed and that's fine for me because, well, rookie. Well, not a rookie so much but I just feel a lot better taking it slow. No hurry for me.
 
I'm a rookie and 70rpm is also my lowest. Stopping within .050 thread relief is not a big deal let alone .100.
I wouldn't sweat it on that low end.

No, there is a 5/16" ball bearing tig welded to the end of the set screw. The aluminum pad has a depression made with ball-end mill for bearing to ride in. Allows a little swivel ability in theory. In actuality just the brass tips on the outboard spider will keep the barrel in position with a little sag, so not sure much gimbling is happening.
 
For a D1-4 and using the 4 bolts on that cheap Grizzly spider, you need to use a thick backplate, where you have enough meat to thread for the bolts but not so deep to run into the D1-4 pins
 
Ok Thanks for that info. I should make something like that. That looks like it would be difficult to hold everything in place while setting up. Ive seen several i was thinking the same thing about.
 
It's pretty simple to lift the barrel and place a pad on the bearing on bottom, roughly center the barrel, both lower screws 45 degrees from vertical, place other lower one, then back off top screws and place the top 2 pads and tighten until bearing has the pad captured. Then you can roll the spindle and pads can't slip out due to indent in them. Easier said than done. I've parted barrels and never had anything slip, so it works and all the hold down you require.

Something I didn't mention. He has Tardive Dyskinesia. It takes a lot of work and medication to operate a lathe safely and properly.

I don't know what I was thinking yesterday. I was thinking of threading, which I do at a very ow RPM. I know I wrote chambering but, well blame it on the fever. I had my Shingrix vax jab and I was feverish and sleepy as can be.
 
The PM-1440-GT resembles my 13x40 Enco. I think I paid $2500 for my Enco in 2000. I use it almost every day with zero problems.
 
Look at the threading chart in the pictures on the 0824. You are changing gears for most imp. threads which is annoying.

If I was buying new I wouldn’t want to have to do that. It appears to be the same as my 0750G in terms of gear changes.
