Theyre kinda light duty for model trains and stuff. If you dont like where its sitting you can just pick it up and move it to another card tableHow about Smithy lathes and mills, haven't seen anything about them mentioned?
I personally use my Clausing 6913 lathe for chambering. I have used the G0509 gunsmith lathe. My only complaint is the D1-6 tooling. It ain't necessary for gunsmith and 99% of lathe work. Chucks and backing plates are very heavy and very heavy.
The machine is heavy and has a wide speed range. If you can't cut a top notch chamber with it, a $250,000 new Monarch 10ee won't help you.
did you make a sleeve for an outboard spider, or how do you do that? Inboard you use a chuck? thanksI put an outboard spider on my PM1440gt. The shortest I can do through the headstock, using the spider, is about 22”. The spindle bore is about 2.050”
My Interapid tenths indicator shows nothing, when looking for spindle runout.
Yes, my outboard spider is a sleeve over the spindle. I made it a tight-ish hand fit, and held it on with set screws. It doesn’t move. It also holds the magnet for my Hall effect tachometer. Inboard I use a four jaw chuck. If I’m doing a barrel that’s too short to reach the outboard spider, I use a fixture held in the chuck, to hold the barrel, with 8 adjustment screws to dial it in.did you make a sleeve for an outboard spider, or how do you do that? thanks 4 that info. i have a 1340gt and use a sleeve adapter for spider on spindle also. I need to build some form of cathead ect for short barrels and actions thoughYes, my outboard spider is a sleeve over the spindle. I made it a tight-ish hand fit, and held it on with set screws. Best value on the market by far PM1340GT.What machine would you buy for gunsmithing that is under $6k ish
Good question. I do not keep up with lathe prices. I would possibly buy used. I can get more for the money. What machine would you buy for gunsmithing that is under $6k ish

Find me a good one cheap and I will kick you a commission.
I would check the local auction sites, craigslist, or your buddies.
I have a buddy with a 4003 and I was impressed. I would prefer a slower spindle speed, but if you use a VFD it will work.Tulsa is a barren wasteland for industrial machines. Certainly not as specialized as a short headstock lathe suitable for gunsmithing.
If I buy another lathe it will proably be a Grizzly. I have a buddy that has two of them. They work perfectly fine for chambering barrels.
