Do it yourself Stock making thread

Continuing this thread just to see if we can make it to 1000 posts on it if nothing else! Started working on stippling today. Step one was making a stippling tool, so went to Lowe’s and picked up a stubby #2 Phillips, and cut a cross into the point to make a four pointed tool. I tried out a few different hammers, and ended up using a pair of old linesman pliers as it seemed to be just the right weight to get the correct depth. Started tapping at random, then rotate 90° or 45° at a time and back filling. About half done before my wife said the hammering was giving her a headache

Looks nice! I thought more guys would be making stocks and posting pics, what with the Covid and now the component shortage. I’ll be back to stock making after I finish an addition I’m building.

Josh. Hi. I have read this thread from beginning-to-end over the last few days and now I am all fired up to build a stock like yours. This is the best tutorial I have ever found on the "net", good job. I have several blanks already and most of the tools you have listed. I have planned to do something like this for along time. But kept getting distracted, this thread has got me motivated. By any chance, do you still have an extra copy of your plans/templates still around? I would sure appreciate getting a set. At any rate I will get started gathering materials while I wait for the weather to moderate and I can get into my shop. Thanks again for your great tutorial.

Duane

Here's a couple if pictures of the machines I use for making my stocks . Plus a few others pics aswell. The blue stock has a 1piece v block trigger guard in it for a barnard action.

Client requested a fancy engraved grip cap.

Doing this one a little more old school with hand tools for shaping instead of my normal power tooling.

(i bought a second grip cap as a sacrifical piece so I dont ruin the engraved one.

I put your pattern in

I bought some aluminum for a stock project I’ve been thinking about for a single shot Stiller 6br. Will update.
3/4 x 6 x 36, 1/2 x 6 x 36, and 1/4 x 4 x 48.
I’m thinking a skeletonized aluminum center with walnut accents.
