Do it yourself Stock making thread

Stupendous!!! Beautiful wood! Nice crisp lines! Great work! Where did you get that blank? I think I want one!
Thank you!

I got this blank in a trade, the gentleman had 4 blanks. He "paid" me with all the blanks, and in return I crafted one of them into a stock for him. This is the one I made for him, I dont have a picture of it completely finished and checkered right this second, but you get the idea.

Was still feeling good (home from work with a pulled muscle today) after taking care of the tip I decided to match up the profile taper on each side to each other. Because this stock was asymmetrical to start with the right side vertical flat was .200" taller than the left. Looking from the tip the left side was also convex and the right was flat(ish). All this work I'm doing is with files, rasps, chisels so far, haven't even touched it with sandpaper yet. Good measurements and layout help keep things in line.

Right side 97% matched to left. Just needs a little more fine tuning.

I know it's been a while, but finally getting this thing near completion. Got the inlet done, new barrel on the rifle, doing minor shaping like bolt slot, ejection port, etc, then getting the action coated black, bedding, dying, then sending to Bc'z for some love. Hoping in the next month to wrap it up and shoot!

I’m working on my first AND LAST shotgun. A new friend asked if I could fix a cracked stock. It was a lost cause so I’m making a new one. Top tang, bottom tang, triggers, safety, internal hammers......OY!! Me and my big mouth! I can’t wait for this to be finished! It is helping to take the rust off my skills, tho.DBAC5ECC-FA74-4A1A-82A1-E08BEE52536B.jpeg

Do you have access to a mill? Could you glue some bowties or something in through there? Do one on either side so it looks like it's original

Hi Kim! Are you sure that’s a crack? It looks like a shallow hacksaw cut.
Is that your hackberry?
hi josh- i was thinking that to but you can see the crack forming down the side. i may try doing something with it. used some polyurethane i had on the shelf on this one and it comes out pretty nice for as easy as it is. 2 coats. its hackberry yes --thanks

yep i have access toa mill. youre right i could
do a repair. notice that spot of devcon - its a repair with a 3/8 rod to fix a crack before. Seems this stock just keeps cracking- only 20br so not much recoil. dont know- thanks

I'm not familiar with hackberry. It looks great. Maybe a bottle or a domino, which is easier to inlay, made out of walnut would blend pretty good. You can see this repair before stippling was completed. (I kept using it)
You could also use a piece of hackberry if you placed something like oak, maple under to strengthen the stock and cover with a hackberry domino and Noone would ever know it was there

Oh I see that- nice work. Good ideas thanks— hackberry is dense about like oak. This is a practice stock for me- hackberry is out of tree from back my shop. Havent really had cracking problems except for this. I think I made wrist to skinny and gun has strait taper barrel. I will fix it up somehow.

That makes me wonder if hackberry something that never really stops moving. It is possible the crack is from a traumatic event and not movement of the wood?

Looks like the crack is following that grain runout? I'm wondering if a cross bolt and domino would help?

Well I didnt drop it or anything. Just setting it and pushing it down in the bags combined with that heavy barrel putting leverage on it could do it I believe. I need to make that wrist area bigger. Thanks

I think there is something about the grain that’s contributing. Ill figure out something to put in there. If it doesn’t look so good that is ok. Its just a practice stock that almost went to the wood stove anyhow. Thanks

It's an interesting looking one. Hackberry laminated around something else might be the way to go
