An easy way to use the Wheeler Method

The problem, as I see it, of using an ejector cut out case with the wheeler method is that the ejector is rotating the bullet in the lands. The Wheeler method depends on feeling the tiny bit of force it may take to extract the bullet from the lands. The rotation is breaking the bullet free prior to the bolt reaching the extraction cam. That's going to give a different feel and thus length, than using a bolt with out the ejector
that all makes sense to me. Im gonna have to investigate this more.. thanks. happy holidays

It may depend on the extractor.

Just checked a couple- my Barnard bolt allows free rotation and my Panda bolt allows rotation with light resistance because the extractor is pushing on the side of the rim.
this morning I decided to investigate this a little more. Using the same gun I removed the ejector from the bolt and proceeded to find touch using the Wheeler method. I did a couple cases this way and then put the ejector back in the bolt. I ground a case head to clear the ejector and went ahead trying to find touch in the same way as above. Using a comparator measuring both these they came within .001. So this time both methods were the same but i know that doesnt mean much, another time they may not be. All this finding touch, jam ect is always a little subjective to me.

I got a Dremel for Christmas. I used it to cut a slot in a fully prepped 6.5x47 Lapua case. Works great! Great idea!

Would you mind sharing what tool/cutter you are using? I tried my dremel but decided I don’t have the correct tool

Thanks in advance for your help

I used an engraving bit. I marked the case with a magic marker. Then used the engraver bit to grind out the slot. I would suggest hold the case in a small vise (which I do not have - I used small vise grip pliers ). I then used a polishing wheel bit with JBs on it, to clean it up.

That’s perfect. It can never be an exact science because a person is going by “feel”. If you found both ways to be within .001” of each other, you can’t do any better than that.

With the ejector removed and multiple people trying to find touch on the same rifle, each person’s own “feel” you could easily vary by .005”. As the lands wears with firing, the angle of the lands will change from its original cut as well so the feeling of touch can become different. It’s all relative and the best a person can do is get as close as possible to touch so you have a known starting point to test seating depth changes.

I was hoping you would post in this thread. So you think using the slotted case instead of removing the ejector will get a person the same result?

I think @dmoran has done this for some time so he may have some input. The slot would cause the case to rotate with the bolt but I have not tried it so I dont know.
