Do it yourself Stock making thread

I was wondering, does anyone ever stabelize the wood that they make the stocks from? Use to do this where I had to have the dimensions hold for molds regardless of temperature and moisture.

Spray chrome is the go we have DNA paints down under but HOK mite have a similar product. Just remember to use a black base when using chrome from memory . I use silver as the base colour for that job. Watch a few YouTube clips dna paints on how to use mutant crystals . Plus heaps of people make there crystals. After being on here for a bit now I mite start posting up a Stocks and paint jobs I do at home.

Stabilizer can add weight to your stocks it can be a good thing or a Bad thing depending on the application of the stock. But hey each to there own I normally seal mine with a two part marine timber sealer epoxy

Check these guys out, I've started getting effect Pearl's and dry candies from them.
Let's be honest here. All these paint manufacturers aren't making thier own specialty products, thier sourcing them adding thier resins and a label.
Akzalta "formally Dupont" sells a gallon of color shift for $6000.
Using paint with pearl I can mix a gallon for about $350.

Got to be careful what you say to the wife before she cuts the hair. I use to have to get a couple of glasses of wine in her before she would cut my hair. She actually use to cut hair for a living. But four glasses of wine was a really bad idea.

Joshb We all can't have super models at home just hanging around to hold our stocks for us. I agree the owner of my latest stock is an ugly bugger but has funny. Bc'z it's even better when you have a mate who owns a paint shop and another mate.whos a rep for HOK so I can pick bith there brains

How did you do it?
Best bet is to use a vacuum chamber so it sucks the air out of the timber and replaces it with the stabilizer. Cactus juice is 1 type of stabilizer that I know of buy I'm shore there is plenty more out there in the market

Seagull is right, I had a vacuum chamber that I would put the wood in and fill with a resin, then vacuum the chamber down and leave it for a day. Pull out and let it dry. Once it is dry it is so hard you can machine it. Turns punky or soft wood into a hardwood.

But he is also right that is increases the weight, less in harder woods and greatly in really soft woods.

Also, trying my hand at cutting a trigger guard - not easy with 3/4” aluminum, a drill press, a jigsaw and files

I made a stock similar to that a while back. Right at the wrist where the forearm meets the butt is thin and is a week point. Mine cracked there about all the way through so I ran a pin from the top all the way thorough the pistol grip and devconed it in. U mite wanna do that as precaution.

Progress is slow and unsteady. I highly recommend that you just buy a trigger guard instead of trying to make one with a router/file, I’ve spent more money and time trying to make one than if I had just ordered a BAT guard. 89F5E224-B705-4CF7-9374-A8869918AB92.jpegA1C41714-30F1-4C83-9F39-E6CF527CE827.jpeg
