My local Gun shop here in the mountains of WV got in a supply of CCI primers today in Small Rifle and Large Pistol along with a ton of 9MM and 22 rf and 223 ammo. I can only take this as a good sign. It is a small shop so if they can get some, perhaps the big online retailers can soon.
The primers were sold out by the end of the day today, but the ammo is still pretty available. Prices were not elevated in the least.

There is powder and primers out there, no maybe not plentiful and easy to find nor the exact brand you want or like, and I mean no gouging prices too.

One place I know of you have to buy so much powder to get 1K of primers. Keeps shooters shooting and scammers at length.

I listened to someone in the retail business who claims to have good info. from their distributors that if the excessive demand stops right now the manufacturers will catch up in about eight months. If the demand continues, no one will even venture a guess.

Maybe true, maybe not. I have no way of knowing.

in the near term any retailer that shows stock will sell out immediately

I was at Blue Collar reloading, who is a large retailer, last week. They do not expect to receive any primers until late 2021 because the manufacturers can make more money putting them in ammo to sell vs just the primer alone.

yet small retailers are seeing some come in

My question is why are these manufactures not hiring more people or increasing production capacity? How many years have we seen a steady increase in demand of all things firearms related even under a Republican president and yet all we have is shortages. Toilet paper shortages I can understand. That industry was probably taken by complete surprise along with the rest of us when that stupidity hit but, ammo makers, gun manufactures component suppliers should have known better by now. Are these companies just poorly ran or unwilling to invest into the needed increase? Haven't they seen the field of dreams? If they build it we will buy it.

In general, companies don't like idle machines. I wouldn't doubt that they've been running 24/7 already. If they want to get more out of it, it may require new machinery. And, they have to consider how long these new machines can run 100% utilized. They don't want to buy new machines to have them run for 12 months and then back down to 25-50% utilization. If they bought new machines 2 months ago, with COVID here, how long would it take to get them? How many workers can they have in their facility while maintaining local capacity limitations for COVID?

it will stabilize in due time

Bottom line is we should be less concerned about the supply chain vs the incoming president and his authoritative attempts to tax and outlaw all things gun related. Don't expect any investment for increased production until the future becomes more positive.
