USPS strikes again with loss of Sako.

The biggest issue when shipping either via USPS or UPS is the way the item is packaged.
If you cheapen the way you do it or don't use common sense in the way you package you are going to loose it.
9 times out of 10 it's not them it's you.
Look at all the complaints that are posted here about big commerical outfits. They are poorly packed.
Remember if you think it's ok put more tape on it and pack smart.

And shouldn’t this be reported to ATF as if the gun is used in a crime later and traced back to original owner, that wouldn’t be good.?
Only if the ffl holder files the report. A police report showing it stolen and the serial number entered into the database is good enough

Registered Mail is kept highly secured and is processed manually.

What are the characteristics of Registered Mail and Registered Mail Restricted Delivery?

The most secure United States Postal Service® mail service (protected by safes, cages, sealed containers, locks, and keys).

A system of receipts is provided to monitor movement of mail from the point of acceptance to delivery.

I shipped a $12,000 rifle to a FFL business using this method.. The company insured the item from their location.

Sorry about your lost but they have the worst tracking of any shipper . I believe your rifle is with the lost ballots . Why trust them when they couldn't get the ballots delivered. I wish you good luck on it being found. Later

.

Wait till you get one that has tire tracks on it, and it wasn't packed good enough..... I got one that the box was destroyed and taped up and a note that said sorry we destroyed your box.... jim

I have shipped a bunch of rifles out by USPS and UPS.
I have done this to prevent theft.
I bubble wrap the rifle first.
Always remove bolt, mags and scopes if sending them to the buyer.
Then I wrap the rifle in shrink wrap. That prevents the rifle from shedding the bubble wrap.
Get a new box never a used box they don't stand up well. Fill box with peanuts and make sure the item in in there solid and doesn't move around.
Get another box and place the 1st box in the in the 2nd box and also fill with peanuts so it doesn't shake or move.
I also place the bolt or mag in the top of the 2nd box on the top. and tape any paper work to the outside of the 1st box(insidebox) so the receiver can see it before opening the 1st box.
Remember to tape it well and take a picture of the box to show what it looked like before shipment.
Remember the boxes and peanuts and tape are cheap in respect of the the item.
Insure it for the full amount.
I have been told by a ups worked who bought a rifle from me that he and the guys in the depot were impressed on how the rifle was shipped. They had a hard time opening it at the Smith.
Also never use a tube to ship any thing large it will roll off the conveyors and fall and as yours did burst open.

If need help on packing info contact me.
Thanks,
Thud
Be careful with the heat gun near the stock when you shrink that wrap.

Danny

It's the shrink wrap that you don't need a heatgun. I get it at home depot in the packing section.
Remember keep stuff simple.

I was wondering what your legal options are? I agree that I would contact ATF since this firearm crossed state lines which I assume would automatically make everything a federal violation (felony?). If it was shipped by air I would contact TSA as well. I have shipped two bolt action rifles on separate occasions with USPS. I shipped the bolts separately and all were registered mail. No problems but I did ship the rifles in "cheap" rifle cases that were locked and then boxed in a cardboard box.
Given the choice I would now use UPS or FedEx instead of the USPS. My LGS shop uses UPS exclusively.

Submit the serial number here. You might get lucky if someone checks the database.

I hope everyone is sending this stuff with signature required. I had a guy send me a rifle via UPS, got lost he was wondering why he never heard from me. I never knew it was suppose to arrive. Luckily about 2 weeks later, it showed back up to him with a damaged box and he found out it got "lost". Sent it back to me with a a sig confirmation and it arrived. I told him to pack it much better as well. Spending a few extra bucks on tracking, signature confirmation sucks but beats a lost or stolen firearm.

Every time I send something via USPS that I want a guarantee on it goes registered.

The thefts at UPS, USPS are the employees that know the addresses and know what you are mailing them. They have it down to a science ....... jim

I think that contacting the ATF on this might be wise, and might just get things moving.

What is a LGS shop?
