USPS strikes again with loss of Sako.

I would never ship a rifle intact in a long box! When I ship a rifle, I remove the stock, wrap the barreled action in bubble-wrap/paper/cardboard, wrap the stock with paper or bubble-wrap, then lay the barreled action and stock side-by-side in a compact head-to-toe (butt pad alongside the muzzle) orientation in a shorter box I usually cut/fold out of a cardboard sheet myself to suit. This avoids using a telltale long/skinny "rifle/shotgun" box, and the shorter box is actually stronger as well. It's shaped like a large briefcase, and it's doubtful anyone would think it's a firearm, and there's less chance someone would steal it along the route.

Never put the gun rifle or a reference to a gun shop on the address label.
I use the owner name or the abbreveation of the shop.
So hopefully the people along the trial of shipping won't be on the lookout for those type of clues.

I wiuld demand to talk to the postal inspector from where it disappeared and tell him to watch the security tapes from where it disappeared. If he wont let him know CNN is interested in running the story.
Don’t give a story lead like that to CNN. They will only pervert any story about stolen firearms and use it as another reason we the public should not be able to own firearms.

Why not report the theft to the ATF. They mite actually do their real intended job instead trying to entrap honest citizens.

I was wondering what your legal options are? I agree that I would contact ATF since this firearm crossed state lines which I assume would automatically make everything a federal violation (felony?). If it was shipped by air I would contact TSA as well. I have shipped two bolt action rifles on separate occasions with USPS. I shipped the bolts separately and all were registered mail. No problems but I did ship the rifles in "cheap" rifle cases that were locked and then boxed in a cardboard box.
Given the choice I would now use UPS or FedEx instead of the USPS. My LGS shop uses UPS exclusively.
Good. I will report it to the ATF and have already contacted the police. I have little hope of recovering the insurance monies but may be able to put some indirect pressure on the thief.

I hope you recorded the serial number. Report it stolen to law enforcement with the serial number. It'll go into a database and if it turns up at a pawn shop or in a crime bust of some kind, there's a good chance you'll get it back, if it takes years. I had a bunch of guns stolen out of my house once, and the first thing the police and insurance company asked for was serial numbers. I lucked out when every gun was taken directly from my house to a pawn shop two blocks away, the numbskull. Within 24 hours every piece was accounted for and the young drug addict was in jail. Pawn shops (and perhaps other gun stores?) are required by law to report everything they take in to police, and hold same for 30 days, pending database searches.

How damaged were they?

Danny

When I ship rifles, I pack them in a PVC tube w/ caps on both ends. I pad them up inside the tube with cheap memory foam pillow pieces. Then build a heavy cardboard box that fits around the tube because UPS wont accept anything round. Tape the living shit out of it with reinforced tape.

Take pictures of your package contents and packing method/materials. Insure for full value. I just insured something for 5000 dollars and it was 57 bucks. Cost of doing business.

The OP packed it as securely as you do! The problem is it is obviously a long gun, and you can't build a shipping container impervious to a box knife or a pry bar.

Not damaged in the least. They were in possession of the pawn shop inside an hour. Some valuable guitars were also stolen and sold to the pawnshop. I got every item back after the police had finished their due diligence, a matter of some weeks - you know what they say about the turning wheels of justice.

I made a report to ATF when I thought I had a firearm stolen from shipment. Being a dealer this was my first legal obligation.
Their reply, "you need an attorney" I never got a clarification on
that answer.
Luckily the package arrived after much delay. LDS

Just received a USPS small flat rate box with two small items inside. Thankfully there was plenty of stuffing inside because the box looked like this:

I have been lucky so far with shipping rifles thru USPS so far, so I think I'll quit while I'm ahead. Most expensive was $6500.00. I've also shipped thru UPS and feel more confident and at ease that it will make it to its destination. It has gotten to wear small packages like the small fit it ship boxes come to my house damaged everytime. What can we do, hand deliver to the ffl?

You are very very lucky, and I am happy that you had the best outcome possible. I have heard of recovered weapons having "gang banger modifications" and general abuse.

Why is it that the ATF will not investigate these stolen firearms. That is supposed to be one of their jobs, or is that the Deep State has infected the ATF that they are allowing these thefts to go uninvestigated so as to further the agenda of the gun grabbing anti 2A communist who are trying to destroy American’s Constitutional Rights. For proof, just look at Biden’s plans for AR15 and more then ten round magazine’s, and remember under Obama’s administration the failed “Fast and Furious” attempt to supposedly entrap Mexican drug gangs by selling them AR15s and M16s, but the real intent was to make American’s citizens ownership of AR15s look bad, and try to ban those rifles. POTUS Trump has two months to clean house of the DOJ, and those agencies under the DOJ’s umbrella.
