Suppressor load

I have a custom 30 nosler. Proof research carbon sendero, kelbly action, iota stock, and a swaro z5 scope. After load development I consistently getting .25”-.35” groups shooting off a bipod and rear bag. After attaching my dead air nomad 30 my poi is 2.5” low and the groups open up to an inch or so. I know some guys have to tweak their load and some don’t but almost everyone gets a poi shift. However are you guys getting this much shift?

sometimes they shift, sometimes they don't. I use my cans on pretty much all my rifles all the time, so I couldn't tell you about shift. But, make a note of its consistency and it's not much of an issue. as long as it doesn't shift erratically, you'll be able to account for it and adjust accordingly.

My groups definitely dont get better. I may get an alignment rod and see if I have a baffle out of line. I’m building a custom 6 creed and will try it on that gun and see if I’m still getting bigger groups. Dead air said to send it in but haven’t had the chance yet

That’s good to know. I thought about dropping my load down and seeing if it would tighten back up when the velocities were about the same as without the can

Is the group degradation immediate, or does it shoot okay for a group or two and then start to spread? If you remove the can does the rifle then go back to grouping well?

The group degradation is immediate. Once the can is taken off it will go back to grouping. I shot slow and take my time. Never shoot with a hot barrel etc

Part of the problem may be the carbon fiber barrel. Droops more that a stainless barrel of same diameter. Proof recommends a bigger diameter for suppressor use. A buddy had one that poi dropped 6 inches at 100 yrds. Really not a big deal his still shot great. Just rework the load and you will be fine.

I also tend to see a more noticeable poi change when the barrel is longer and thinner with a suppressor. Mostly see a tighter group suppressed. When I have a group poi away from my aiming point, I always have to fight the urge to "look" for the shot. Seems to effect my follow through and can open up the group.

What brand is your surppressor?

Yes, I get that much shift. Yes I have had rifles open up the groups, I’ve also had others tighten up the groups.

you’re hanging a pound off the end of your barrel, it’s going to sag, and it’s also going to change how it vibrates.

I love shooting suppressed but no longer use them in competition, got tired of the inconsistancies that would crop up from time to time. POI shift was normally 1" at 6 oclock out of a bolt gun. Gas guns are a crap shoot, some there was no shift at all, others 6" one way or the other, and worst case was a 308 that would print a good group but location of group changed every time suppressor was installed. Suppressors used were Dead Air, AAC, Surefire with Surefire being the most consistant. Now on 22 RF I'm a true believer!

^ This, a 2.5" shift down at 100yds isn't out of the ordinary, and as long as it's repeatable is no big deal. I have had cans (one of which is a Nomad 30) tighten or leave group sizes unaffected, but not always. Simplest answer is to zero and do your load development with the can on. In the unfortunate case you have to shoot without it, you can use an alternate unsuppressed version of the rifle profile in Strelok or Shooter with the offsets entered.

Your powder burn rate may be too slow you will need 100% burn at least 3 inches before the bullet exits the barrel
quick load will help you get dialed in in this regard.
N570 will not be a good choice in this case

What does this have to do with his group changing size and location between suppressed and unsuppressed? I've seen no generalized effect from different speed powders in that regard. Also, Viht's product page for N570 specifically mentions 300 WM, which is nearly identical in capacity to the 300 Nosler he's shooting. Given Viht's own product page and his unsuppressed results, the powder/case combo looks like an excellent fit, he may just need to tweak the load a bit to get back into a node with the can hanging off the end.
