338 Lapua improved data

Do you have a preference on n570 vs rl33 in the 338 Lapua improved?

And do you experience the throat moving more with n570? It has a reputation of being a barrel burner.

I find n570 to be very temperature stable and always gives me low ES.

I haven’t had a chance to test any RL33
Alex,
I'm running RL33 at 3000+/- fps in my 338 LM Imp w/300s. Barrel is 29". Accuracy is fabulous. Haven't run it out further than 1000 yards. It's a Broughton 5C. Pretty much one my favorite barrels. Good to hear that the throats don't move much if shot conservatively. Barrel looks real good after only 300 rounds. When I can find some N570, I'm gonna try it. Gonna be tough to beat the 33. We'll see.

Having good luck with my Bartlien 5r. Accuracy is excellent, I have not tried to get up to the next node yet. I'll do that after elk season. Im happy with the 6 groove Kriegers that I have made to my specs as well. Have a customer running 2980fps out of a 28" edge with one with N570. Also have a 5r Bartlien they made to my specs Im about to chamber for a customer, so we'll see if that one can run up to the next node. I think it will. It just comes down to figuring out the right configuration. Im definitely working on it.

I’m running a 28” Bart 5r .338 lap imp. My load is 100gr of n570 also. It wants to shoot small with every seating depth I’ve tried. Velocity is only 2936 right now. I was hoping for more but this barrel seems a little slow compared to other numbers I’ve seen people posting.

I don’t think I can reach another node with pressures I’m comfortable with. My COAL is 3.950 with .010 jump

I wanted to try a shorter barrel in a lighter rifle. This is a 26" barrel, the rifle weighs about 12.5 with the scope. Its still a fresh barrel, only 50 fire form rounds. I went out this morning to do some seating depth work with my normal 100 grain load. The mirage was so bad my aim point was disappearing so I only shot one group because I wouldnt be able to shoot the difference between anything in these conditions. I went with .010" off because thats what the last 2 barrels liked. I was very pleased to see 2" of vertical at 1k. 3 barrels in a row all have shot the exact same load. 300 grain Bergers at 2840, and I would expect it to speed up to about 2900 ish after the barrel speeds up. Then I will try to get to the high node. This is without a doubt the easiest cartridge to load for I have played with. thumbnail (27).pngthumbnail (26).pngthumbnail (24).png

How many FPS do you think you drop from shooting in -15 below temps
to 60+ degs?
Have you tested this before?
I know it will change with different powders, but you guys up there
do a lot of testing in really cold weather. How do you translate it back to warmer weather?
Your load would definitely change.

I would have some 570 data but I'm still kind of sick (going on 8 weeks) and it hurts to breath lol. Alex you should take out a known load barrel if it stays cold tomorrow!

Tom

I stayed in the truck with the ammo this morning so the velocities were closer to what Id expect in 60 degree weather. I did not let the ammo or rifle soak in that cold. The barrel is not fully sped up yet so I cant trust velocities yet anyhow. We do shoot these year round and when its not quite this cold I will keep the ammo outside and this combo handles temp changes so well that I really have not had to chase the powder charge on any of them. These big 338s handle environmental changes really well. One of the reasons I never get to into temp stability of powders is that I tune my rifles for the conditions I will have to shoot in. I'll try to do a good cold soak vs warm truck ammo just for the hell of it next time Im out in this weather. But even if you are hunting in 15 below, I would keep the ammo in a warm coat pocket. Theres no reason to cold soak it and bring in more variables.

I can take out this barrel and compare hot vs cold, should still show the difference. I will throw 5 rounds in the truck tonight. No promise I want to go out in that again. There was no wind, so it wasnt bad. If its windy NO WAY.

Curious about contour and twist also. Especially the 12.5 lb rifle. Great shooting!

My last 3 have been, 32" Krieger 6 groove, 9.35 MTU, 30" Bartlien Mtu 9.35, 26" Bartlien HP 9.35. Most of the ones I have built and gotten feedback on end up in the same place as well. Within .5 gn or so. and .002" or so of seating depth.
The stock is a McMillan Remington hunter. It comes straight back. I really like these.

Its not quite as sweet as it may seem. In the open country where its easy to find spots to shoot far the wind is terrible. I usually have 20-30 minutes of decent conditions at first light, after that its a waste of bullets. Half the time its already blowing in the dark. In fact it is down right aggravating.
Truth in a post :) Interesting how range envy hits, but the truth is rather different than what you might think.
My shooting is largely in the desert SW. Like Alex, the private range where we can shoot out to two miles is very windy. Typically 12-14mph from 60 degrees to the target. Perfect shooting conditions, eh? Oh, and then add dust and mirage. Mind you, this is where you sort the wheat from the chaf when it comes to optics, but that's another post.
Then there's vegetation. Unlike what most folk from back East imagine, the desert is not devoid of vegetation. Actually we have a lot of creosote bushes that can grow, oh, roughly 5 feet high, sometimes more, great for obscuring views of target.
What this means is, you have to have either an elevated firing position (best example, watch Mark & Sam after Work on YT. They basically shoot from a mountain -- my exaggeration -- down onto well-tilled farmland.) We shoot off the top of a 200 yard berm, that isn't level.
Then there's spotting where your shot went. Good f'ing luck with that with the bushes, wind, etc. We've tried shooting up into an elevated target but they are always in a rocky area where we shoot so good luck spotting those at a mile+.
LOL, the ELR shooter's lot is not a happy one. :)
The only spot that looks perfect, apart from Mark & Sam's (too far to drive) is on the CA/NV border that no-one who films there will identify but it's not hard to find. No vegetation, looks like the Moon, easy to spot shots. It's a 7-hour drive from me.
The best other option we have is to shoot down a very remote power line road from an elevated position. Maybe it's my training/conditioning but I am never comfortable with it even though I could see anyone coming or at risk from miles.
The best spot I have ever seen, I think it's in NY somewhere is this:
A lake is perfect, as if you drop short, at least there's a splash.
Not many of those available around here, the bass fishermen object to ducking.... :)
