What is Your favorite Groundhog or Varmint rifle scope??

A few years ago I took a 6BR to SD to hunt prairie dogs that had a NF 8-32X scope with a MOAR reticle on it. I was using this rifle to shoot dogs from 6-800 yards. I used other rifles for closer shots. I found that the vertical crosshair tended to cover the dogs that were standing at those ranges. When I got home, I sent the scope to NF and had them put in a MOART reticle. I now have 2 more NF 8-32X scopes on different rifles with the MOART reticle and haven't looked back.

Hey Chance - Good scope question. I didn't get to do my annual prairie dog safari this year but before that was canceled, I got a Burris Eliminator with the button and mounted it on my Tac 20. Pretty neat scope and works well at the range.

NF 5-25 ATACR, SFP with very fine (MOAR-T) reticle. Not only is it great glass, but it is heavy (39 oz.), which helps with seeing your hits, and it has a built-in throw lever, which is important to me because I use my scope for scanning, and not binoc's, like some guys do. Has a great illumination system if you want to shoot in a low-light situation. The SFP keeps the reticle out of the way when I turn down to scan for targets.

Out of focus camera but this is what it looks like in use:

I really like the old Japanese Tasco scopes for my varmint rifles. Picked up a handful of them over the years for really cheap. I have them in 6-24x, 5-20x, 6-18x, and straight 36x. Glass is excellent. Crystal clear edge to edge on all power levels. Can shoot all day on ground squirrels and not get a migraine like some of the cheaper scopes with junk glass. Tracking is great with solid clicks on the target turret models and they always hold zero. Would have to spend in the $1k+ price range for a modern day scope to match the glass of the old Japanese Tasco.

I also have an old Japanese made Bunshnell Elite 6-24 AO on a 6mm Rem that I am very fond of. Most Bushnell scopes these days are junk in my opinion, but the old Japanese Elite has top notch glass just like my Tasco’s

I'm showing my age but my favorite has been a Leupold 24X M8 fixed power that I've owned since 1978. I do have a newer rifle with a Leupold 6-18 VX2 and can't complain about it.

I shoot Rock Chucks up to about 600 yards. I have owned many high dollar scopes and my favorite is the Burris Verosity. Reasonalby priced with great optics. The older Burris scopes are also excellent.

I've found that for me, the fixed (16x) Super Sniper scopes are just plain awesome! Clear, bright and repeat adjustments make them worth ever penny. It's easy to make quick wind call adjustments with the reticles they have and hold over is easy if you're not a knob turner. They are so easy and clear my 12 year old has confirmed kills on hogs at 310 yards to date. He likes that scope more than anything else he's looked through also.

I have two of the SWFAs. Almost certainly the best performing $300 optic you’ll find. They are tough, have repeatable and accurate turrets, and the glass is way better than a $300 scope has a right to be.

I prefer the MIL reticle to their MOA because of the reduced visual clutter. The moa however has a tiny center floating dot, which I prefer.
The only complaints I’ve got with the SWFA scopes are 1) a bit heavy, and 2) the tall turrets. I’ve had cases fte because they hit the tall windage turret and bounce back into the action.
I’ve found I usually have a variable optic on the highest or lowest magnification, so a fixed optic doesn’t give up all that much utility.

Leupold vx iii 6.5x20 with target turrets.
Close second is the 8.5x25 MK 4. Spent the last week on a pd hunt shooting the MK 4. Good stuff.

What are you guys running for Glass on your Groundhog guns?(Varmint guns)
I have used different stuff over the years but mainly use Leupold 12x FX, and Varix III 6.5-20x40 and 8.5-25x40 with Target Turrents and my favorite Fine Duplex reticles! I been wanting to try a new scope but dont see any that would suit my needs. Todays scope are to busy and too Tactical for my old school ways i guess. I would love to find a new scope for a new build i will have finished soon.

Nightforce SHS is good enough for most distances.

Hey Chance - I really like my Swarovski Z5 with the BT reticle. Also bought on a whim one of the Burris Eliminator lll scopes I was planning on using this past spring on my annual PD safari... but the COVID canceled that trip.

My favorite varmint scope doesn’t exist but it would be something like this:
Weaver Nitrex 6-24 FFP with side focus and the Leupold Varmint Hunter reticle.

Back in the 90's i also used and still have a Leupold 6.5x20 40mm 1" tube, target turret on the elevation only. super fine reticle cross hairs with a 1/8 minute dot. Paid $389.00 for it. Had it on a 22-250 Remington , shot 55g Nosler ballistic tips at like 3800 fps. The 40 grainers could get 4000 fps out of them. I still have some of them.
The scope did make one trip back to the factory as i lost accuracy, they rebuilt the erector on it.

Greetings,
My Leupold 10x and 12x fine duplex get the most use. An El Paso steel tube Weaver 16x fch 1/8th moa dot on my 6mmAI has been on more critters than I care to remember...
John

I will be the odd one here for a couple reasons. I preffer lower power scopes than most on here are shooting because of the area i hunt. One of if not my favorite scopes is a weaver grand slam in 4-14 power or something like that. I have to be honest, the glass really suprised me compared to some more expensive scopes i have and i really do not hear much praise for them on the internet (cause the internet knows all Lol), what shocked me the most is that the weaver tracks absolutely dead nuts perfect every time so far. At that price range or even at twice that price i just have not seen that.

NF BR 8-32X. Usually below 15X is plenty. Could dial up more if mirage is not too prevalent. Just great glass-so darn sharp-better than my NXS by far.
