Looking at a new scope

I have a rem 700 VLS in 223 and I am looking to top it with a new scope. I have the field narrowed down to 2 scopes. This is a varmint,Ground Hog, Coyote) rifle which will also do lots of duty on the rifle range.

Leupold VX-III 6.5-20X40mm 30mm Tube

AND

Nikon 5-20x44mm Monarch

Here is my biggest question other than the name what does the Leupold offer over the Nikon? What abotu the tube is having a 30mm tube better than a 1" tube if the 30mm has a 40mm obj and the 1" has a 44mm obj?

I guess it is a matter of opinions, but I think the 30 MM main tube is the best choice. May cost a few bucks more but that would be my choice. Bill

A 30mm tube offers nothing over a 1" tube in terms of light gathering, brightness, or optical clarity.

A 30mm tube allows more room for the scopes internal adjustment mechanism. It will feature more MOA of adjustment than a 1" scope, all other things being equal.

My first question almost always is how do I get it repaired if needed. I can not answer this yet since up till yesterday I never had to get a scope fixed. I have heard good about Leupold have not heard anything on Nikon. What is the difference between the reticles? I hate it when the reticle hides the varmints. How much moa. adjustment are in the scope? Good luck.
