Details on AR Tactical in NRA High Power (Midrange)

I could see if the .223/5.56 class didn't have enough shooters to have a match...giving them the option of shooting in the "everything else up to and including .308" class (combining upwards). However, I don't think it could go the other way...that is if the .223/5.56 class had enough shooters and the big bore class didn't make.

That's fairly common throughout High Power (at least around here)... not enough Service Rifle shooters, they get 'rolled up' into the Match Rifle group, since they are (technically) a legal 'Match Rifle' as well (though not the other way 'round). But if there are a bunch of Service Rifle shooters and only one or two Match Rifle, the MR guys are only in it for overall 'Match Winner'. Same scenario plays out with FTR vs. F-Open, or a lot of times you'll see a combined SS/EX/MA class, and a HM class - same principles apply.

Any one else have thoughts on this?
Not too many years ago in F-T/R, we had a similar situation in local matches. FTR often didn't have enough shooters for their own awards, so we were lumped with F-Open. Annoying but no big deal. Now we don't have that problem. Maybe this ART thing will progress to the point where they can have their own awards and not have to be lumped into the "next class up" due to lack of participation. I have my doubts, but it could happen....

And....if they are using a bipod, shoot the F Class target. A sling changes everything and that is why Palma shooters shoot a 1 MOA target. Some guys are all about instant success and accolades for "high scores" without paying their dues. Like shooting a 1 MOA target at 600 yards with a scope. My BONE STOCK Bushmaster DCM rifle shot 3/4 moa at 600 with irons....4.5# trigger and all. So a tricked out AR with a scope should certainly be capable of shooting smaller than that...IF the shooter has developed the necessary skill set. That is and always has been the defining element in competitive shooting.

Peace, out.

I thought the idea of AR Tactical was as a gateway for new shooters. Making it tough would work against the 'gateway' objective, I think.

I'm going to give it a try, one way or the other.

There's always been a problem with making things 'beginner friendly' while handling the people who get seriously competitive. At what point do you start encouraging people to move up and out into the 'bigger' classes? There's a variety of answers, and they all have their pros and cons.

Like @Warren Dean I 'remember' my old Bushy V-Match carbine and rifle versions being pretty danged accurate, chrome-lined barrels and all. Same with my WOA Service and Match Rifles.

That said... either I picked up some seriously bad habits shooting FTR, or I 'forgot' how to shoot an AR worth a dang, cuz my efforts with an AR over the last couple years have been disappointing at best. Either that, or my 'memory' is a bit selective about what I think I remember... nah, couldn't be that  ;)

If I stick with the gun I have in hand right now... I may be needing *all* of that 2 moa ten ring - and a really calm day. The scope I have right now I don't think is going to do me any favors either - the reticle is going to cover most of the X-ring, and holding off on the thin lines of the target is going to be interesting. 1/10 mil clicks are pretty coarse when you're used to 1/8 moa, too.

I've got a 'plan'... been looking for an excuse to 'build' a more 'precision' oriented AR anyways, now it's just going to have some MR AR Prone Tactical*** features ;)

*** seriously, is there a short form for that dang class name? ;)

If it's a separate classification, it almost sounds like there would need to be another separate 'match', at least on paper ie Conventional Prone Midrange, F-class Midrange, and Midrange Prone AR Tactical.
It's positioned as a 3rd discipline.
Prone
- Service
- Match/Any
Tactical
- 223
- Open
F-class
- FTR
- Open

So... no one has any input on the optics part of my earlier question?
The rules are clear that the scope can only go up to 15x. Just like the 4.5x on Service.

We also allow setting an adjustable at 15 for our local matches but I wouldn't report a score for classification for a rifle that has more than 15x on board.

Scott Miller did shoot 200-10x/200-15x/195-8 for a total of 595-33x @ 600yds. last month at Bayou. That's the best I've seen or heard of around here.
