Question for pistol shooters

So I've been thinking about buying a really nice pistol lately. I've got my grandpa's old S&W Model 19 which is fantastic and I shoot it a lot. Never felt like I needed more revolver than that, but the only pistol I have is an inherited Ruger P85 and it really does let me down. It's a fine gun but it's not what I'm after.

I'm thinking I want a 9mm, and I'm thinking ~$2000 is the budget. I've been eyeballing a CZ TSO, or maybe a Shadow 2. I've been keeping an eye out at the gunshops to see if I could find one to handle a bit, but haven't had luck yet and COVID really stopped the casual search. So here's the question: what is a satisfying, full size 9mm pistol for plinking and fun that you'd recommend. Something quality. If there is a great american made one, then that weighs strongly into the decision too. If you know of a 2011 that's at $2600 but is a great setup and a real noticeable step up from my budget, please mention it too. I'm a bit of a Luddite when it comes to pistols and don't have a great grasp on what is available at what price points. Thanks in advance for any advice!

This year Dan Wesson came out with a new model the has the CZ-75 frame and a 1911 slide. The Wessons in general get uniformly good reviews. Walther has a steel frame PPQ now, also with good reviews. Any new P210 will shoot better than you can hold and have a really nice trigger.
Not bashing on the CZ at all, they make very nice machines. A lot of the clones are too.
Keeping under 2K leaves a lot of options on the table.

But with autos you really need to hold it and see how it fits your hand, much easier to change out grip sizes on revolvers

If I was going to buy a 9mm pistol, I’d buy that sweet old Mauser in the classifieds here. It’s only going up in value, too. That’s one pistol I’ve always wanted and never bought..........yet

Modesty prevented me suggesting that, and that its sold pending funds as of yesterday. Was fun to ring the steel at 50 yds with that.

Keep your eyes on the Armslist Classifieds. I’ve seen a couple of Sig P210s in the last few months going for around $800. They didn’t last long. I love my P210. It’s the most accurate pistol I own, the trigger is fantastic, etc. IMHO, it’s the best 9mm pistol out there.

STI International

you mean staccato? Lol

I still can’t believe they changed they name

I think ck arms still makes an entry level limited 2011 for $2300. You cant go wrong with them. I’d buy from ck arms before I bought a staccato p or r. If you can find a nice used sti edge for sale Around $1,700 or $1,800 that would be a decent deal too

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I will add that I've got big hands. A model 19 doesn't really fit me: I can't get my finger in the trigger guard without breaking my grip from the gun and I end up pulling the trigger with the second joint of my finger (closest to palm). There is no way for me to contort my fingers in such a way as to use the pad of my finger, or even the first joint like a lot of folks do. So that's a major consideration and part of why I was thinking of going with a large, full-frame pistol. A generously sized trigger guard, changeable grips, and an adjustable trigger shoe would be very nice options to have!

I have several 1911s. I’ve tried a lot of pivoting trigger pistols through the years, but always come back to the 1911, with its straight pull trigger.

Sig Navy 226, is one I really liked when I had it. And have owned several of the Sig models. Beretta Cheetahs were another I really liked, though more expensive to feed.

If you can, get to a range that rents pistols to shoot. That will give you some hands on time to see what suits you best.

For 9 MM and paper punching I like the Colt Gold Cup Trophy in 9mm, which is one of my Bullseye Pistols, the Sig P210 as stated and the Glock 34 Gen 5, which if buying new, would be the least expensive of them all. You can also spend a lot more for other target grade 9mms, 2011 etc.. Depends what you are looking to achieve.

@Evan , the TSO is a fine choice of a Premium handgun, as are many others mentioned. I've got mine in 9 & 40, and what I'll tell you is all my other Really Nice handguns usually stay oiled up in the safes.
Fit a 10X bushing, and you're done.
IMG_20200715_090241.jpg I never go to the range without a TSO anymore.

I've got the Shadow II. One of the smoothest operating pistols I own. I've played with the TSO. Just as nice. My brother has the Sig P210, that is a very nice pistol as well. Another option would be a used STI race gun. Lot of good choices out there in the price range you are looking at. Hard to go wrong with any of them.

Well, the good news is that this thread has got me looking at the SIG P210T more seriously. I may have to pick one up myself.
It's a great looking gun - I'm a sucker for the classic looks! The only, admittedly small, drawback is the single stack 8rnd magazine.

I'm not a pistol guy by any stretch of the imagination, but recently I purchased the Sig P320 M18. That gun could rapidly turn me into a pistol guy, it's a ton of fun to shoot, fits well, large capacity, and is extremely accurate. It has also been adopted as the new Carry gun for the USMC.
