Medium Sized 22 Pistol Recommendations

I personally would have bought the S&W Model 46 in the classifieds. The 5” field barrel alone is worth a significant amount of the price.

I had a Highstandard Sharpshooter but gave it to my brother in Oregon , but the M&P is easy to shoot and worry free. The Ruger Bearcat is a great carry gun on horseback in a crossdraw flap holster. I really like how it is made with the one piece frame.Very solid and small. Also liked the Ruger convertible, 22-22mag. Everyone needs some kind of 22. The Highstandard was the best.

I do like the idea of the classic 22s like the colts, k-22, or the s&w 46 that was in the classifieds a while ago, but those are a bit spendy for me and I think I’d probably get a s&w 41 for that kind of money (even thought that’s bigger than the ‘medium’ 22 I’m after currently.)

Any love or recommendations for classic high standard autos? They seem to be significantly cheaper than colts, but I’ve heard that magazines can be a real killer.

I mentioned the 46 because of the 5" field barrel. They often bring $500 because they are rather rare. I have also had some High Standards and sometimes shoot a friend's Duramatic and owned a Supermatic Citation. I currently have a copy of the suppressed HD Military devised during WWII. The Duramatic has a 4" barrel and is reliable and accurate. The Supermatic was also very accurate and reliable but rather big with a barrel that I think was 6". The HD Military has some flimsy features like the safety. It never feels right and the slide release is on the right side of the gun. I really enjoy shooting my friend's Duramatic, but my next 22 purchase will be either a Nelson or Marvel conversion.

I had a 41 and it's a great pistol, but I miss the HighStandard Sharpshooter more. Just felt better to me. You need to hold them and see how they balance in your hand. They are different.

I jumped in on this and just got a star wars tx22. Green dot,shake awake and sleep, auto dim.
Ordered a green projected green laser,
Misfed 3rd rd of OLD win wildcats which i am certain to blame that shell as 300plus cci std vel never missed a beat.

I have more 22 pistols than I care to admit including the new Colt King Cobra and a model 41 that I use in informal pistol matches. If it's a semi auto you are looking for and something lighter and more manageable than the Mark II, the Glock 44 is good if you are a Glock fan. The Walther PPKS is good if you like the feel of something of substance in your hand. But, and I hate to admit it, as others have said above the the Taurus TX 22 is a clear winner. It eats everything you feed it, it's light, accurate for what it is (I have a laser mounted on mine) and it fits the hand better than most out there. Ordinarily I choke when the word Taurus is uttered since I have had bad experiences with them in the past but one of the local LGS folks whose opinion I respect talked me into one. He was right, Taurus hit one out of the park with the TX22. Read the reviews.
