Teslong Borescope... what a suprise...

I went through something similar to your friend's plight. What finally worked was to plug the barrel at one end and pour eze-off oven cleaner into the other and let it stand upright for 24 hours.

Thanks. I know he tried oven cleaner, but I don't know what his procedure was with it.

Amazon shows Teslong units with semi-rigid cables ($49) and one with a 26-inch rigid rod ($79). It seems to me the rigid rod might make it easier to absolutely identify where in the barrel you need to scrub, but the rigid cable may come close enough. Advice?

Also, are there any online gun stores or parts suppliers (I'm thinking Brownells or Midway) that can sell these things for anywhere near $49? I like to support our dedicated firearms suppliers whenever I can.

The attached is the throat of my Win Model 70 7mm Rem Mag. 26" stainless barrel. Three of the lands are eroded quite badly in the throat. Not sure why all the lands aren't worn the same. Is this barrel toast? I haven't shot it on a target lately, but plan to this week if it quits raining.

I'm going through my rifles checking the bores and it just breaks my heart. Here's a pix from the Colt A2 HBAR I used to shoot in NMC service rifle matches. Colt factory barrel. The bore runs 2 o'clock to 8 o'clock. The striations running 90º to the bore appear to be chatter marks from the rifling tool.

Yeah, it's kind of depressing. Turns out ignorance is bliss, in this regard. I have found a couple of barrels that need to be replaced. Does anybody rebarrel their hunting rifles, or just toss them and buy a new Ruger American or something. Since the cost of rebarreling is more than the cost of the new rifle.

Well, I finally did it and ordered one. It got here yesterday. Today, I got out one of my rifles that had been put away uncleaned. I went through my normal cleaning routine and then fired up the Teslong. *&^%$#@$%^%&&(*(^%^#@%%^* I thought my barrel was clean! It appears that there is a coin shortage in the USA. I'm pretty sure I had enough copper in the last 5" of the barrel for at least 2 pennies. I'm happy with how this rifle shoots but, I got a little something going on where all the copper had really collected. Now I've got 9 more "clean" rifles I have to check!

Welcome to the "Guess I had better change my cleaning routine" club.

Been there, done that, and have multiple t-shirts to prove it. Always thought I had a good cleaning process before Teslong...wrong. Paid off though. My little .17 Remington was slowly growing its groups towards the 3/4" mark and I assumed (remember what they say about assume) the barrel was dying. Serious work with Wipe Out and brushes and they have dropped back to sub-half inch groups with some under .25". Others have benefited from better techniques too. Grit your teeth and soldier on!

Jerry Fisher hunts with a 7MM mag. he built many years ago on a pre 64 M70. I have read that he has shot so many elk and other game with it the rifling is almost gone for a ways up the barrel but the game can't tell the difference. Of course if you are shooting competition it would matter a lot. Not trying to be snarky, just sayin.

Borrowed from another poster on another board.

"A bore scope is probably beneficial for most people. But not for Bob. Bob used to be the high scoring shooter at local matches. He put almost $5,000 into one of his target rifles. But then one day he bought a bore scope. He hurried home from the range mumbling something like "cracks n craters". We didn't see him for a while after that, so we asked his wife "What about Bob?" She just shook her head and said, "He's been spending a lot of time in the gun cleaning room with the door locked." After a couple more weeks of not seeing Bob at the range we heard that his wife had moved out and some other relatives went over to check on him and found Bob smoking JB Bore paste from a water bong. His hands were bleeding; he had turned his target rifle into a smoothbore.

We hope Bob gets the help he needs for his addiction. Bore scopes are useful tools, but some folks just can't deal with what they reveal."
