Thinking Of Getting Back Into Prone (Smallbore)

So i am thinking about trying to see if i can still shoot prone.. i am favoring smallbore more so this time.. if i can't, then i will do the Smallbore F-Class instead. But for now, my dilemma is what's a good scope now to use for Smallbore prone.. i read that some use a 36X, but i have never tried it with a power that high.. still thinking that a 24X might be the way to go.. Now of the modern scopes that are in current production.. which scopes are favored now?..

No need to discuss F-Class scopes.. i am set there
 
Part two of this.. when things get back to normal.. what ranges near NE TN have smallbore matches i can attend?
 
Boy there are a lot of good optics out there. I will have to let the glass shooters chime in. (I shoot mostly irons) you might consider a scope from f-class with smaller objective and be able to use the variable power.

only scopes that i have used in the past for prone was in highpower.. for a long time i used a 1994 Leupold 24X FC, then like an idgit.. i sold that.. got a NXS 3.5-15.. loved the clarity on that one.. i would consider one of the 5-22x ones,, but do i want that weight?
 
Nice to have 1/8 min. clicks for smallbore. Weaver T-24 and the B&L 24X both had it and work well for SB prone. Both were available with fine crosshair or with small BR dot. The BR dot is too small for prone, gets lost in the black sometimes. The fine crosshair is okay, actually a little larger and easier to see on both of these than on the Leupold (which has 1/4 min. adjustments). Fixed power is lighter and generally 24X is enough and mirage usually doesn't eat you up @ 100 yd, in the summer as the 36X often does.

Oak Ridge, TN has smallbore prone matches in NE TN. You can send me your email and I will get you on the mailing list. As for scopes to shoot prone a good Leupold at 20X or higher is a very good choice. If you are getting on in years you will want a 1/4 moa dot or bigger retical. I am 76 and shot ever thing from 20X to 40X prone and gone back to 30X with 1/2 moa dot because you never lose sight of the dot as eyes fatigue.

I have a vintage 24X BR Leupold. Works great on my Prone 22 Anschutz. Works great for me.

Think about your needs for smallbore 100yd. shooting. You may be able to use the higher power scopes but if you go with zoom scope with a 30mm or 34mm scope body it's going to be heavy. You don't need this in 100 yd. prone shooting, it will wear you out. Look for a 1" Leupold or Weaver and I think you'll be much happier and won't get worn out through a 20 shot string with sighters. Made this change myself last year and won't go back.

Did you go with a 24 or 36?
 
If you are able to shoot prone, the .223 with the new bullets is very competitive in fullbore and palma.
