Pierced primer, broken sear, common?

Hi. I was fire forming Lapua 6mm br brass into 6 Dasher. I had a primer pierce. After that my Jewell trigger would not function. It looks to be a broken sear. Is this caused by the pierced primer? Should I look for other damage? I disassembled the bolt and cleaned it. It does not appear to be damaged. It is a Stiller Predator action. Thanks for the help in advance.

Yep piercing a primer will kill a trigger. Send it back to jewell they will take care of it for ya.

Also check the inside of your firing pin assy. A piece of primmer can find its way in there some how and get behind the firing pin stop. Happened to a friend of mine. Broke 2 Jewell triggers before finding this..

I've heard of and seen Jewell triggers that died from a pierced primer. Never seen the issue with Timney or TriggerTech. Also, I pierced three primers during a record target with a 6BRA (H4895 and ambient temp swing) and the Jewell held up. That was just luck.

A .062” pin without any extra slop helps a lot.

Does anyone have a picture of exactly what breaks on the "sear" when a primer is pierced? I've heard of it happening, but wouldn't know what to look for.

Not luck. In 20 plus years of shooting PPCs on the hot side since I shoot them out to 500 yds regularly I have pierced some primers. After having bolts bushed that problem went away. I think if you had a broken sear you are unlucky I don't think a Jewell normally has this problem. Now a piece of ptimer in the bolt can often stop the rifle from firing until removed, but that is not a trigger problem.

As far as bushing bolts, I have had my R700 bolts bushed but never ever needed it on one of my BAT actions. In the case I cited all I needed to do was have a barrel that shot small with something other than a "hot" load. But that, in my opinion, was unlucky.

Too much H4895 for a hot and humid day. It shot in the early relays with no problem. After the sun got out and the temp jumped up is when it happened. I have a distaste for H4895, at least the lot I have.

I never liked 4895 for that reason.....until......I put a new .222 barrel on and it would not shoot anything. In a desperation move I tried 4895. It was made for that barrel. I like is a little bit now. Thanks for the reply.

Been there, done that. Sunday second string Red Desert Regional, Rawlins WY. Now have both Rem. bolts bushed by Greg Tannel, same load, no pierced primers.

It seems to me that non bushed firing pins are the problem. I'll bet for those that have a correctly sized pin/hole love there Jewells. And that sounds kinda pornographic. Sorry.

Man back in the day we used to blank so many primers those little discs would just stop up firing pins and it was so bad they made a tool to scrape the firing pin shoulder area. Sometimes youd have to stop during a group and clean em out. Boltfaces were so pitted it looked like it was done on purpose and was so common nobody even cared. Over those 10years or so and going to a couple big matches a month with 50+ shooters minimum i never seen a jewell break a sear. I kept a spare in a hanger but i didnt use it and nobody borrowed it. Not saying it didnt happen since i heard so much about it, but i never heard anybody scream their trigger was broke. Even shot a bunch of matches next to arnold himself and never seen him have to fix one or take one with him.
