The OP ask for a opinion with very restricted set-up , regarding the .308 , and got all you guys wound up . Let's compare equal competitive loads , for the .308 . A typical F class TR .308 load for 1,000 is avg. of 44.3gr Varget ( or higher ) behind a 200gr Hybrid , and as I stated earlier , 2640 - 2660 MV . When you start laying down parameters like using a SMK/TMK and reduced velocities , the .308 will not compare favorably . Kind of like a CM load at 2640 and a 100/90gr bullet . Most of the TR shooters I know and shoot with at BA shoot 200gr bullets at 1,000 . And for the un-initiated , most TR guns weigh in at 17-1/2 to 18lbs. They aren't 7lb. hunting rifles . If recoil is a issue , don't shoot TR . Take your CM and go shoot open with it and get beat up . Grew up shootin a .308 and carried a 17lb XM-21 in Nam for awhile . "Ain't no big thang". Like I said earlier ....Nothin wrong with a CM . Just not my choice ....But let's not try comparing a CM comp load to a load I wouldn't hunt with out of a .308 .. Like everyone else , JMO .
