The Difference!

Was shooting this past Sunday afternoon from 1000 yards in a steady wind direction from 9 o/clock and wind was hitting 12 to 16 mph. Jeff was shooting his 6.5X47L using the 123 gr. Scenar using 37.5 Varget and was keeping them inside the Palma 10 ring using 13 MOA left windage. I was shooting my '06 using the 185 Berger VLD Target bullet shooting 54.0 grs. H4350 and was doing the same on the POI however the .30 caliber bullet only needed 8 MOA windage.

The Ole Warhorse ain't quite dead yet! ;D ;D

Waaaay back when it was in vogue to venture into the realm of wild cats and small bullets at higher velocities, many of us put our .06's aside. It has been said that history tends to repeat itself so I'm not surprised that .06's seem to be showing up more frequently at the range. Not as hunting rifles, but as tactical and other designs of rifles in many types of competitions. My only remaining .06 is a 1903 Springfield (circa 1942) and it shoots as good as any of my tactical rifle set-ups - especially in the wind. When I get serious about my next build I just may build a tactical 30-06 out of respect for that old reliable cartridge.

Last summer, I was shooting 1000 yard F-Open at our club.. We had a wind from right to left that was trailing about 15m.p.h. (or so), I was shooting a 6.5 x 284 with 140 Hybrids launched at 3030f.p.s. One of the guys I was shooting with was shooting a 7mmWalker with pointed 180 Hybrids at 2880f.p.s. I was holding on the actual #8 on the right side of the target>>>> to my surprise so was he! However, I had 1.5 mins of windage in and he had NONE! Very sleek, H-I-G-H-B.C. bullets definitely rule the roost in the wind!

The newer powders and lapua brass and other advances must have helped the 06 as these things have helped other cartridges .

The 06 will never DIE

Nice post Rick. Could you put up an image of your ammo -- maybe a couple .30-06 cartridges standing and one flat, in front of an ammo box or on a target paper. I think this might make for a nice short bulletin story on the "Old warhorse".

To many of the younger generation....the Ole Warhorse is 'outdated' but I can guarantee that the 30/06 is a VERY ACCURATE cartridge for 1000 yard shooting...and even out further if need be! With some of the advanced powders that we have today....it would surprise many shooters with what it's capable of doing with the right rate of twist and sitting within a good platform! My rifle has a 1-10 ROT and I had it short-throated such that with some throat erosion I could just seat the bullets out and keep right on shooting yet with the Berger 185 VLD Target Bullet and with it sitting upon the lands the pressure ring of the bullet avoids the shoulder/neck junction so as to avoid the 'dreaded donut'! IN MY RIFLE....my recent load is 55 grs. IMR4350 which moves this bullet along at 2825 fps and it's a very accurate load. Rifle throat is at .3365" and I turn all the brass to a thickness of .0120".
